Wonders of Australia 2026: The Outback in Gold and Silver – four coins, one set

  • Minting quality: Two collector's coins in the highest possible minting quality "Proof" (PP), complemented by two bullion coins in Brilliant Uncirculated (BU)
  • Precious metal content: 248.81 grams fine weight – one troy ounce of fine gold and around seven troy ounces of fine silver, each with a fineness of 999.9
  • Strictly limited: Mintages of just 500, 5,000, 10,000 and 75,000 pieces worldwide
  • Special finish: 5-ounce Kangaroo coin with double-sided gilding in yellow gold and 22-carat rose gold
  • Renowned origin: Minted by the Perth Mint, official legal tender of Australia

Red earth, rugged rock faces, a dingo howling from the rocks – and above it all, a wedge-tailed eagle gliding through the sky. The Australian Outback is a landscape of extremes. It is precisely this wilderness that the Perth Mint celebrates with its series Wonders of Australia, whose 2026 edition is entirely dedicated to "The Outback". In this set, we have brought together four issues: a gold coin, two silver coins in different minting qualities, and an imposing gilded 5-ounce coin featuring a kangaroo design.

The four coins in detail

1 oz Gold "The Outback" 2026 – investment gold with character

The centrepiece for investors. The gold coin contains one troy ounce (31.10 g) of gold with a fineness of 999.9, measures 32.60 mm, and carries a face value of 100 Australian dollars. On the reverse, an entire ecosystem unfolds: two kangaroos drink at the riverbed, a frilled-neck lizard rests on a stone, and the dingo keeps watch from its rocky outcrop. Above it all, the wedge-tailed eagle circles with its companions, while emus stride towards the rising sun in the distance. The mintage is limited to 10,000 pieces. As an additional security feature, the coin bears a micro-laser engraving visible under magnification.

1 oz Silver "The Outback" 2026 in Brilliant Uncirculated

The same richly detailed design, now in fine silver 999.9. With a diameter of 40.90 mm, the scene appears even more generous on the silver coin. Face value: 1 Australian dollar, maximum mintage: 75,000 pieces. Here too, the micro-laser feature provides additional security. For silver investors, this is an attractive addition that, thanks to its limited mintage, also appeals to collectors.

1 oz Silver "The Outback" 2026 in Proof

Now it gets exciting for collectors. The Proof edition does not simply show the familiar image but features an entirely distinct design: a dingo stands on a rock, two emus pause in the riverbed, a snake lies coiled on a stone, and a crocodile emerges from the water. Three kangaroos leap through the landscape, the eagle soars above, and rugged mountain ranges rise in the background. Mirror-like fields and frosted relief create the contrast that makes Proof coins so sought-after. Limited to just 5,000 pieces.

5 oz Silver "Outback Kangaroo" 2026 – gilded on both sides, PP

The highlight of the set, quite literally. At 61 mm in diameter, a kangaroo leaps through the Outback against a glowing sunset, with more of its kind passing by on the horizon. The sun is finished in radiant gold, while the sky and outer rim are finished in 22-carat rose gold. Even the obverse features rose gold gilding accenting the floral border. Five troy ounces of fine silver 999.9, face value 8 Australian dollars – and a mintage of just 500 pieces.

One design year, two precious metals, three minting techniques: this set shows, in the smallest of spaces, what defines the Perth Mint – investment-grade quality and collector's craftsmanship from a single source.

Shared obverse: King Charles III

All four coins feature on the obverse the portrait of King Charles III, designed by Dan Thorne, along with the weight, fineness and face value. A wreath of native Australian flora frames the portrait. The reverse designs are by designer Jennifer McKenna. Her initials "JM" appear on every coin, as does the "P" mint mark of the Perth Mint and the year 2026.

Who is this set worth it for?

Gold is humanity's oldest currency. It has outlasted empires, paper money systems and countless crises, and remains a proven store of value and hedge against inflation. Silver complements this role as a tangible, widely sought-after precious metal. The set caters to both worlds:

  • Investors receive, with the BU coins in gold and silver, high-purity precious metals from one of the world's most renowned mints.
  • Collectors will delight in two Proof editions with small mintages, a distinct secondary design, and an elaborately finished large coin.
  • Anyone looking for a special gift will find a combination that, both visually and in substance, goes far beyond a single coin.

Comparison: Wonders of Australia and the Perth Mint classics

When people think of the Perth Mint, they usually think of the Kangaroo, Koala, Kookaburra or the Lunar series. These classics impress with enormous recognition, but are sometimes minted in significantly larger quantities. Wonders of Australia sets a different tone: smaller mintages, an entire landscape rather than a single animal, plus a Proof variant with its own design. To be fair, coins in Proof quality and finished editions carry a higher premium than pure bullion coins. They also require careful handling – it's best to handle them only with gloves and store them protected. In return, they offer a collector's appeal that a standard coin simply does not have.
