The German-born sculptor Adolph A. Weinman created this “Walking Liberty” for the Half Dollar of 1916. Since 1986, the silver American Eagle has carried it on the obverse, and below IN GOD WE TRUST is his monogram AW.
The other side
An eagle coming in to land.
Since 2021, the reverse has shown “an eagle as it approaches a landing, carrying an oak branch as if to add it to a nest”, as the United States Mint describes it. It was designed by Emily Damstra and sculpted by Michael Gaudioso.

The Liberty Coin Act of 9 July 1985 sets a diameter of 40.6 mm, a weight of 31.103 g and silver of 999 parts in 1,000. It even specifies the inscriptions: the year, LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, 1 OZ. FINE SILVER, E PLURIBUS UNUM and ONE DOLLAR.
