Augustus Saint‑Gaudens created this Liberty at Theodore Roosevelt’s request for the 20‑dollar gold coin of 1907. In his own words: “My idea is to make it a living thing and typical of progress.” Since 1986, the gold American Eagle has carried a rendition of his design.

Since 2021, to mark the 35th anniversary of the programme, the reverse has shown the head of an eagle. It was designed by Jennie Norris and sculpted by Renata Gordon, and their initials JN and RG stand beside the eagle.

The Gold Bullion Coin Act of 17 December 1985 sets the fine gold content, weight and diameter of each of the four sizes. It requires the gold to be bought from deposits in the United States, within one year after it was mined. In the absence of such gold, gold from reserves held by the United States may also be used. According to the United States Mint, “their weight, content, and purity are guaranteed by the United States Government”.
