Saxony-Anhalt by Night 2026: Magdeburg Cathedral Between the Elbe and the Starry Sky

  • Strictly limited: A micro-mintage of which there are only 100 pieces worldwide
  • Growth opportunities: Very high value appreciation potential thanks to a consistently limited mintage and lively demand from the collector community
  • Rarity: An extremely rare collector's coin that you are unlikely ever to encounter at coin fairs
  • Investment goal: A tightly limited collector's piece whose strict limitation carries a high potential for value appreciation
  • Design: Germany's first cathedral planned as Gothic from the very beginning – once shown frontally with its twin-tower façade, and once viewed from the banks of the Elbe, each time under a full moon and a violet shimmering Milky Way
  • Exclusive: This collector's item is carried exclusively by Kettner Edelmetalle
  • High-quality finishing: Full-surface colour application on both sides plus partial gold plating, specially carried out for you in several technical production steps
  • Material / fineness: A full ounce (31.1 g) of silver in the top fineness of 999.9/1,000
  • Manufacturer: Kettner Edelmetalle – the coin is additionally finished afterwards in Germany
  • Country of origin: Germany; Liberia serves as the issuing country with a face value of 20 dollars

Magdeburg, shortly after sunset. Over the Elbe, the clouds glow in orange and purple, and on the cathedral square the light of the floodlights is reflected in the cobblestones. And right in the middle stand the two west towers of the Cathedral of St. Mauritius and St. Catherine, rising almost 100 metres into the night sky. It is exactly this moment that the 1 oz silver Saxony-Anhalt by Night – Magdeburg Cathedral 2026 captures. It belongs to the "Cities and Landscapes" series and is issued in a very low mintage. A piece for collectors who love Gothic architecture, have their roots in central Germany, or simply seek something that not everyone owns.

✔ Two Views of a Landmark

The obverse places you directly in front of the west façade. Strictly symmetrical, the two towers rise with their finials and crocketed pinnacles, in the centre the gable with the clock is enthroned, and below it opens the pointed-arch west portal with its fine tracery. The cobblestone pavement of the cathedral square gleams as if it had just rained. Above on the left a full moon shines, and across the firmament stretches the Milky Way in violet and blue. At the bottom edge, the inscription "1 OZ 9999 FINE SILVER 2026" appears in golden letters.

The reverse is quite different. Here the view shifts to the banks of the Elbe. The nave, transept, and the twin-tower front rise above the roofs of the old town, the lanterns along the riverside promenade are lit, and their warm light casts golden trails across the dark water. On the right, the face value "20 DOLLARS" curves downward, and at the bottom centre sits the small coat of arms of Liberia.

✔ Imperial Tomb, Shepherd's Legend, and 300 Years of Construction

The story begins in the year 937. Otto I founded the Mauritius Monastery in Magdeburg at that time, and in 968 the city became the seat of an archbishopric. When a great fire destroyed the Ottonian cathedral on Good Friday in 1207, Archbishop Albrecht von Käfernburg used the opportunity to build a new one modelled on French Gothic style. Work on the choir began in 1209. The cathedral was consecrated in 1363, and the west towers were not even completed until 1520. The north tower measures just under 101 metres, the south tower a good 99 metres. This makes the cathedral the largest sacred building in central Germany to this day.

Inside rests Emperor Otto the Great, with his first wife Editha nearby. Above the Paradise Portal on the north side, a stone relief commemorates a beautiful legend: a shepherd is said to have found a gold treasure while tending his flock and donated it to the stalled construction of the cathedral.

Above the exit door to the viewing platform of the north tower, the year 1520 is still inscribed today – the year in which Magdeburg Cathedral was completed after more than three centuries of construction.

✔ Colour, Gold, and Precision

This edition only gains its nocturnal magic after minting. A specialised workshop in Germany applies the colours to both sides of the coin with great precision: deep night blue, luminous magenta, the warm yellow of the illuminated sandstone. The partially gold-plated border frames the scene like a picture frame, and the finely milled edge rounds off the impression. The coin is delivered in Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) quality in a coin capsule that reliably protects the colour brilliance.

✔ Refined Rarity Instead of Mass Production

Magdeburg and its cathedral have numismatic tradition. In 2005, the German 10-euro commemorative coin "1200 Years of Magdeburg" was issued in 925 silver, followed in 2021 by the 2-euro commemorative coin for Saxony-Anhalt featuring the cathedral as its design, the 15th issue of the Federal States series. The latter was minted in the millions and continues to circulate through countless wallets to this day. Similarly widespread are well-known silver bullion coins such as the Maple Leaf or the Vienna Philharmonic. Their advantage: they are traded close to pure material value.

A refined edition, on the other hand, carries a collector's premium. In return, you receive craftsmanship, regional relevance, a fineness of 999.9/1,000, and genuine rarity. With a mintage of just 100 pieces, only a tiny circle of collectors will ever own this design. It is precisely this limitation that makes the coin such a sought-after rarity. Anyone who already owns issues such as Naumburg Cathedral, Wittenberg Castle Church, or Wernigerode Castle from the same series will here complete the centrepiece from the state capital.

✔ Silver as a Noble Carrier Metal

Even though the design takes centre stage, it is worth taking a look at the metal itself:

  • For thousands of years, the white metal has served as a coinage and monetary metal and is regarded in many cultures as a symbol of wealth and prestige
  • Electronics, solar, and medical technology ensure strong industrial demand against limited supply
  • It is durable, retains its properties over generations, and is therefore excellently suited as an heirloom
  • Under current German law, profits from the sale of physical precious metals are generally tax-free after a minimum holding period of one year

Many buyers also value precious metals as an inflation hedge or as a building block for their personal crisis protection. With this edition, however, the joy of collecting is clearly the focus.
