It is shortly after sunset in Naumburg on the Saale. Above the cathedral square, the last red streak on the horizon fades away, the cobblestones still glisten with moisture, and golden light flickers behind the cathedral's tall tracery windows. This is exactly the atmosphere captured by the 1 oz Silver Saxony-Anhalt by Night – Naumburg Cathedral 2026. It belongs to the "Cities and Landscapes" series and is issued in a very low mintage. A piece for all collectors who love medieval architecture, feel connected to Saxony-Anhalt, or want to add a true highlight to their collection.

✔ Two perspectives on a World Heritage Site

On the obverse, you stand right in the middle of the cathedral square. The view falls on the mighty flank of the cathedral with its pointed gables, slender pinnacles, and the glowing glass windows of the Gothic choir. Two towers with green patinated domes rise into the night sky. A large full moon floats in the upper left, while the Milky Way stretches across the firmament in violet and blue. Along the lower edge runs the inscription "1 OZ 9999 FINE SILVER 2026" in gold lettering.

The reverse switches to a bird's-eye view. Now Naumburg lies at your feet: red tiled roofs, lights in the alleyways, and behind them the gentle hills of the Saale-Unstrut region. All four towers are united here, two with pointed spires, two with domes. On the right runs the face value "20 DOLLARS," and at the bottom sits the small, gold-highlighted coat of arms of Liberia.

✔ Uta, the Naumburg Master, and almost a thousand years of history

In the year 1028, Emperor Conrad II moved the bishop's seat from Zeitz to Naumburg, and shortly thereafter construction of the first cathedral began. Today's cathedral was largely built in the first half of the 13th century and shows, like hardly any other building in Germany, the transition from late Romanesque to early Gothic style. As a double-choir structure, it has one choir each in the east and west. The West Choir is world-famous. It was built by an unnamed sculptor-architect, the so-called Naumburg Master, together with his workshop, in just six years.

There stand the twelve founder figures, which, despite being almost 800 years old, appear astonishingly lifelike. One figure stands out from the ensemble:

"The most beautiful woman of the Middle Ages" – this is how Umberto Eco described Margravine Uta of Naumburg.

Her proud, mysterious expression is even considered to have been the inspiration for the evil queen in Walt Disney's "Snow White." Another special feature: the cathedral has two preserved high-medieval choir screens that separate the choirs from the nave. Since 2018, the building has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List and is one of the most important stops along the Romanesque Road.

✔ Color, gold, and precision: the finishing

This piece reveals its magic only after the actual minting. A specialized company in Germany applies the nocturnal world of colors to both sides of the coin with great precision. Night blue, purple, glowing window light, and the orange of the clouds: every shade sits exactly right, making the colored design look almost like an oil painting. The partially gilded rim frames the scene like an elegant picture frame. Added to this is the finely milled coin edge. The coin is delivered in Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) quality, protected in a capsule so that the color brilliance is preserved permanently.

✔ Finished rarity or classic bullion coin?

Well-known silver coins such as Maple Leaf, Britannia, or Vienna Philharmonic are minted in the millions every year. Their advantage: they trade close to the pure metal value. A finished edition like the Naumburg Cathedral, on the other hand, carries a collector's premium. In return, you receive craftsmanship, regional identity, and genuine rarity. With a mintage of only 100 pieces, only a tiny circle of collectors will ever own this design. It is precisely this limitation that sets the coin apart from mass-produced items and gives it the status of a sought-after rarity. Anyone who already owns other coins from the "by Night" series, for example from Bavaria, Berlin, or Baden-Württemberg, will find here the atmospheric counterpart from Central Germany.

✔ Precious metal carrier with a long tradition

Even though the design is the main focus, the metal itself deserves attention:

  • Profits from the sale of physical precious metal of this kind are generally tax-free after a holding period of at least one year
  • For thousands of years, this white metal has served as a coin and currency metal and is considered in many cultures to be a symbol of wealth and prestige
  • Electronics, solar, and medical technology ensure strong industrial demand amid limited supply
  • It is extremely durable, retains its properties over generations, and is therefore wonderfully suited as a family heirloom

Many buyers also value precious metals as an inflation hedge or as a building block for their personal crisis protection. With this edition, however, the joy of collecting is clearly in the foreground.
