Baden-Württemberg by Night – Heidelberg Castle 2026: Germany's Most Romantic Ruin Beneath Sparkling Stars

  • Strictly limited: A tiny edition of only 100 pieces worldwide. There will be no further specimens of this issue.
  • Growth potential: Very high potential for value appreciation thanks to the uncompromisingly small mintage and the brisk demand for refined landscape and cityscape designs
  • Rarity: An exceptionally rare collector's coin that you will encounter in only a few display cases
  • Investment objective: A sought-after collector's item whose tightly limited mintage brings attractive potential for value development
  • Design: The brightly lit Heidelberg Castle beneath a full moon and the Milky Way. The reverse adds the Gesprengter Turm (Blown-up Tower) and the sea of nighttime lights along the Neckar.
  • Exclusive: This collector's item is available exclusively from Kettner Edelmetalle and no other dealer
  • High-quality finishing: Luminous colorization and partial gilding are applied especially for you in several technical production steps
  • Material / Fineness: A full ounce of pure silver with a fine weight of 31.1 grams at the top fineness of 999.9/1,000
  • Manufacturer: Kettner Edelmetalle; the coin is additionally finished afterward in Germany
  • Country of origin: Germany. The issuing country of the coin, with a face value of 20 dollars, is Liberia.

High above the Neckar, the lights come on. The red sandstone façade begins to glow, and the Milky Way rises in the sky. This exact moment is captured by the 1 oz Silver Baden-Württemberg by Night – Heidelberg Castle 2026. Heidelberg's landmark does not appear here as a sober architectural view. It glows like a nighttime painting from the Romantic era. Among the refined silver coins of the 2026 year of issue, this edition from the "Cities and Landscapes" series is one of the most atmospheric designs, and with 100 specimens, also one of the scarcest.

✔ Obverse: A Castle in the Glow of the Stars

On the obverse, Heidelberg Castle sits on the wooded slope of the Königstuhl. It is bathed in warm, orange-golden light. It appears to shine out into the night from countless windows, and the ornate Renaissance gables stand out clearly against the dark forest. On the left rises a mighty round tower, flying a flag. Above it stretches a deep blue starry sky: in the upper left, the Milky Way shimmers in violet and rose tones, while on the right stands the bright full moon. On the horizon, a band of fiery red evening light glows over the hills of the Odenwald. At the bottom of the image, a few rooftops of the old town can be seen. Along the edge runs the inscription "1 OZ 9999 FINE SILVER 2026" in gold-colored letters.

✔ Reverse: Blown-up Tower and Lights Along the Neckar

The reverse shows the castle from a different angle. In the foreground stands the famous Gesprengter Turm (Blown-up Tower). Its blasted-off section of wall still leans against the tower body to this day. Behind it, the illuminated castle buildings line up, with the city on the Neckar sparkling further in the distance. A bridge full of lights spans the river. Here too, the Milky Way and the red-glowing horizon stretch across the sky, so that the obverse and reverse appear like two views of the same summer night. On the right stands the face value "20 DOLLARS", and at the bottom edge a small gold-colored coat-of-arms emblem.

✔ Residence of the Prince-Electors, Icon of Romanticism

Heidelberg Castle looks back on a turbulent history. A castle in Heidelberg is first documented in 1225. At that time, Ludwig the Kelheimer received it as a fief from the Bishop of Worms. Later, the Prince-Electors of the Palatinate expanded the complex into a magnificent castle and resided there for nearly three centuries. The Ottheinrichsbau, begun in 1556, is considered one of the most important buildings of the German Renaissance; the Friedrichsbau was built between 1601 and 1607. During the War of the Palatinate Succession, French troops destroyed the castle in 1689 and again in 1693. On September 6, 1693, they also blew up the tower that is known today as the "Gesprengter Turm" (Blown-up Tower). In 1764, a lightning strike set further sections ablaze. The Prince-Electors thereafter remained in Mannheim, to which they had already relocated their residence in 1720.

It was precisely as a ruin that the castle became world-famous. Hölderlin and Eichendorff celebrated it in verse, and William Turner painted it repeatedly. Count Charles de Graimberg ensured its preservation, and his drawings are considered precursors of the postcard. Today, Heidelberg Castle is one of the most visited attractions in Europe. The Heidelberg Castle illumination fits particularly well with this: three times each summer, the ruin is bathed in red light to commemorate its destruction. A fireworks display over the Neckar follows, a tradition dating back to 1613.

"Nature knows how to decorate a ruin to achieve the best effect." – Mark Twain on Heidelberg Castle, "A Tramp Abroad" (1880)

✔ Finished with Color and Gold

What makes this ounce so special is its elaborate design. The bold colorization reveals every detail: the glow of the windows, the texture of the red sandstone, thousands of stars in the sky. The partially gilded rim encloses both sides like a fine picture frame, and the reeded edge sits comfortably in the hand. Every production step is carried out in Germany with great precision. You receive the coin in Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) condition, safely protected in a capsule.

✔ 100 Specimens – Why the Limitation Matters

A mintage of just 100 pieces is exceptional even among refined collector's issues. Due to the strict limitation, only a small circle of collectors can enjoy this piece. For such a well-known design as Heidelberg Castle, a very low mintage often ensures lasting interest. For anyone seeking something special, it is a genuine rarity.

A comparison helps put this into perspective. Classic bullion coins such as the Maple Leaf or the Krugerrand are issued year after year in the millions. Their advantage lies in their closeness to pure metal value. Anyone seeking art, color, gold, and rarity combined on one ounce, however, will find it here. With a diameter of 40 mm and 999.9 fine silver, the coin offers plenty of surface for the richly detailed design. It also pairs well with the sister editions "Bavaria by Night", such as Neuschwanstein Castle. Together, they form an atmospheric collection of German landmarks by night.

✔ Silver as a Noble Carrier Metal

Silver has accompanied humanity for millennia as a coinage metal and a symbol of prosperity. For a collector's ounce like this one, it is the ideal material:

  • For private individuals in Germany, profits from the sale of physical silver are generally tax-free after a holding period of at least one year
  • Silver is durable and retains its properties across generations, making it easy to pass down
  • Demand from electronics, solar, and medical technology underscores the metal's intrinsic value
  • As a globally traded commodity with limited supply, silver is highly liquid

The inflation hedge and crisis protection for which precious metal has traditionally been valued come as a side benefit with this coin. However, the focus remains on its design and its rarity.
