Night over Freiburg im Breisgau. The rooftops of the old town glimmer, countless windows still burn with light, and right in the middle the Minster rises into the sky as if trying to touch the stars. This is exactly the moment captured by the 1 oz Silver Baden-Württemberg by Night – Freiburg Minster 2026. It belongs to the "Cities and Landscapes" series and is issued in a very low mintage. Anyone who loves the southwest, admires Gothic architecture, or is simply looking for an exceptionally beautiful piece for their own collection will find it here.

✔ Two coin sides, one starry sky over the Breisgau

The first side shows the Minster in its full breadth. On the left, the west tower rises with its openwork tracery spire, while to the right two slender towers rise above the colourfully patterned roof. Warm, golden light makes the sandstone practically glow. In the foreground, gables and fir trees crowd together, while behind them the ridges of the Black Forest blur into the evening red. Above it all stretches the Milky Way in violet and blue, with a bright full moon to the right. A small detail for connoisseurs: on the left edge of the image, a flag in the state colours of black and gold flutters. Along the bottom edge runs the golden inscription "1 OZ 9999 FINE SILVER 2026".

The value side changes the perspective. Here you look up at the tower from below, just as visitors do on Münsterplatz. Buttresses, pinnacles, and figures seem almost tangible. Moon and Milky Way accompany the scene, while on the left a flaming red sky glows above the houses. At the bottom sits the small gold-plated coat of arms of Liberia, with the face value "20 DOLLARS" running to the right.

✔ Over 300 years of construction for the "most beautiful tower on earth"

It all began around 1200. Duke Berthold V of Zähringen wished for a worthy burial place and had the town church expanded in late Romanesque style; he was interred there in 1218. From around 1230 onward, construction continued in the Gothic style. Before long, the citizens themselves took responsibility for the building, which is why the Minster is still regarded today as a symbol of civic self-confidence. The west tower was completed around 1330. It was the first Gothic tower with a fully openwork tracery spire, and there was no model for it. It wasn't until 1513 that the entire structure, built from roughly 250-million-year-old red sandstone, was finally complete. Since 1827, the Minster has been the cathedral church of the Archdiocese of Freiburg.

A sentence formulated by art historian Jacob Burckhardt in a lecture series in 1869 became especially famous:

"And Freiburg will probably remain the most beautiful tower on earth." – Jacob Burckhardt, 1869

From this praise grew the popular saying of the "most beautiful tower in Christendom". When bombs destroyed large parts of the old town in November 1944, the tower remained standing, partly thanks to its light, permeable construction. For the people of Freiburg, it thus became a symbol of hope.

✔ Colour, gold, and precision: the finishing

The real magic only emerges after minting. A specialised workshop in Germany applies the nocturnal world of colour to the precious metal with great precision, on both sides. Deep night blue, glimmering window light, the red of the evening clouds: every shade is just right. The coloured depiction thus appears almost like a painting. The partially gold-plated rim frames the design like an elegant picture frame. The reeded edge of the coin sits comfortably in the hand. The coin is delivered in Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) condition and securely stored in a capsule, so that the colour brilliance remains perfectly protected.

✔ Finished rarity or classic bullion coin?

Well-known silver coins such as Maple Leaf, Britannia, Krugerrand, or Vienna Philharmonic are minted year after year in the millions. Their advantage is obvious: they are traded close to the pure metal value. A finished edition like this one, by contrast, carries a collector's premium. In return, you get craftsmanship, regional identity, and genuine rarity. With a mintage of only 100 pieces, only a very small circle of collectors will own this design. It is precisely this limitation that clearly sets Freiburg Minster apart from mass-produced goods and makes it a sought-after rarity. Those who already own the Bavarian designs in the series, such as the Frauenkirche or Nymphenburg Palace, will find here the fitting counterpart from the southwest.

✔ Fine silver as a stable foundation of value

The design takes centre stage. But the base metal also has plenty to offer:

  • Profits from the sale of physical silver are generally tax-free after a holding period of at least one year
  • For thousands of years, the white metal has served as a coinage and monetary metal, and in many cultures stands for prosperity and prestige
  • Electronics, solar, and medical technology ensure high industrial demand against a limited supply
  • Silver is durable, retains its properties over generations, and is therefore wonderfully suited as an heirloom

Many buyers also value precious metals as an inflation hedge or as a building block for their personal crisis protection. With this edition, however, the joy of collecting is clearly the main focus.
