In 1987, Philip Nathan showed Britannia standing, whereas she had often been seated before. According to The Royal Mint, the shield stands for protection, the olive branch for peace and the trident for her connection to the sea. As the coin turns, the portrait of King Charles III appears, designed by Martin Jennings.

Britannia 2027: The Anniversary of a British Legend

  • Material / fineness: pure silver with 999/1,000 fineness, exactly 31.1 g fine weight
  • Manufacturer: minted by the renowned The British Royal Mint
  • Country of origin: United Kingdom

Thirty years. That's how long the Silver Britannia has been accompanying investors and collectors around the world. It first appeared in 1997 as a companion to the Gold Britannia, which had already been introduced in 1987. The 2027 year of issue is therefore a true double anniversary: 40 years of gold, 30 years of silver. The Royal Mint honours this milestone with a specially designed, wave-shaped privy mark featuring the number "30" and a background structure in which the anniversary number can also be found. Among all known silver coins, this year of issue is thus immediately recognisable.

The Britannia enjoys the reputation of being the oldest bullion coin produced in Europe. Behind it stands a mint from the United Kingdom with more than 1,100 years of history, now based in Llantrisant, Wales. Tradition you can hold in your hand.

A Design Full of Symbolic Power

The centrepiece of this Britannia silver coin is the standing Britannia, designed by sculptor Philip Nathan. He created this classically inspired depiction in 1987 for the first Gold Britannia – and to this day it has lost none of its appeal. Britannia wears a Corinthian helmet, her hair and robe billowing in the wind. In her right hand she holds the trident, a symbol of her connection to the sea, while with her left she rests on a shield bearing the Union Jack and holds an olive branch. Protection, peace, naval power: three attributes, one powerful image. The inscription reads "BRITANNIA", the year of minting 2027, the weight "1 oz" and the fineness "999 FINE SILVER".

On the obverse, King Charles III faces left. The official coin portrait is the work of Martin Jennings. Until 2022, Queen Elizabeth II graced the Britannia; since the 2023 issue, the series bears the likeness of the new monarch. Surrounding it are his titles and the face value of 2 pounds (2 GBP). This makes the Britannia official legal tender in the United Kingdom – a feature of genuine bullion coins that pure silver rounds lack.

Four Security Features Against Counterfeiters

Hardly any bullion coin is protected against counterfeiting as elaborately as the Britannia. The Royal Mint relies on four visual security features that discourage counterfeiters from the outset while also allowing you to carry out a quick authenticity verification:

  • Latent image (hologram): At the bottom left of the obverse, a small round circle catches the eye. Depending on the viewing angle, it shows either a trident or a padlock – the lock as a symbol of security, the trident as an attribute of Britannia herself.
  • Wave animation: The fine, wave-like lines in the background evoke the swell of the ocean. The optical illusion is created through micro-details – in 2027, additionally incorporating the anniversary number "30".
  • Micro-text: Running around the design in tiny lettering is the inscription "DECUS ET TUTAMEN".
  • Tincture lines: On the shield, extremely fine lines create different tones and patterns of silver.
"Decus et Tutamen" – ornament and safeguard. Hardly any motto suits a coin so consistently combining beauty and security better.

Britannia, Maple Leaf or Philharmonic?

Anyone wanting to buy a one-ounce fine silver coin will sooner or later come across the great classics. The Canadian Maple Leaf scores with its 9999 fineness, the Vienna Philharmonic with its euro face value. The Britannia holds its own with a particularly sophisticated security concept and high international recognition. By the way: until 2012 it was still minted in 958 Britannia silver; since 2013 it has been made of 999 silver. Its current fineness matches the standard of most bullion coins – which, in any case, does not change the fact that it contains a full ounce of fine silver.

A practical advantage becomes apparent should you ever wish to sell your coins. Dealers worldwide know the Britannia, and its security features make verification easier. For collectors there is a further bonus: anniversary issues with their own privy mark, such as 2027, often attract particular attention.

Why Silver Convinces

Silver has been money, a store of value and a symbol of wealth for millennia. Unlike paper money, which relies solely on trust in governments, this precious metal holds intrinsic value. On top of that, there is strong demand from industry: silver is hardly replaceable in electronics, solar technology and medical technology. At the same time, supply is limited.

  • Significantly more affordable than gold – ideal for building wealth piece by piece
  • High liquidity and worldwide tradability
  • Durable and resilient – a value that can be passed down through generations
  • Usable as a means of exchange in small units, especially in times of unstable currencies
  • In Germany, profits from the sale are generally tax-free after a holding period of at least one year
