Big Five III Buffalo & Krugerrand Privy Mark 2026 – the finale of a cult series

  • Strictly limited: only 1,000 pieces worldwide – an exceptionally very low mintage.
  • Minting quality: highest possible quality Proof (PP) – mirrored fields, matte relief.
  • Growth opportunities: high potential for value appreciation due to the strict limitation and the continued strong demand for the series.
  • Rarity with a finale character: sought-after collector's coin – the fifth and final issue of the Big Five III collection.
  • Design: a charging Cape buffalo in sculptural relief, paired with the classic Springbok design featuring a tiny "Buffalo" privy mark.
  • Material & fineness: 2 × 1 troy ounce fine silver, fineness 999/1,000, totalling 62.21 g fine weight.
  • Investment goal: bullion coin offering inflation hedge and long-term value preservation.
  • Manufacturer: South African Mint – the coin blanks for the Krugerrand strikes traditionally come from the renowned Rand Refinery.
  • Country of origin: South Africa.

Some series bow out quietly. Not this one. With the Buffalo, the South African Mint concludes its Big Five III collection – and does so with a double strike of two ounces of silver in a dark brown wooden case. Included are the 5-Rand Big Five III Buffalo issue and a 1-Rand Krugerrand bearing a small buffalo privy mark. Total face value: 6 Rand. Following the Elephant, Lion, Rhino and Leopard, the quintet is now complete.

The design: Cape buffalo meets Springbok

The reverse of the Big Five coin depicts the Cape buffalo in full motion – head lowered, horns spread wide, the muscles almost tangible beneath the hide. Surrounding it are the inscriptions SOUTH AFRICA and BIG FIVE 2026, along with the South African national coat of arms. Its counterpart, the Krugerrand, remains true to its iconography: a leaping Springbok, the year 2026, and the inscription FYNSILWER 1 OZ FINE SILVER. The subtle difference sits above the antelope's back – there, the buffalo appears as a privy mark, linking both strikes into a unified duo. On the obverse of the Krugerrand, Paul Kruger is shown in profile, flanked by SUID-AFRIKA · SOUTH AFRICA.

Only 1,000 sets – why that matters

By comparison: the regular 1 ounce Big Five III Buffalo silver coin is issued in Brilliant Uncirculated quality with a five-digit mintage. This privy mark set, on the other hand, is strictly limited to just one thousand pieces worldwide – once distributed among collectors in Europe, Asia and North America, statistically very little remains. It is precisely this limitation that turns the issue into a genuine rarity. Anyone who has followed the series since the Rhino or Leopard sets knows the pattern: closing issues are traditionally the most sought-after pieces in numismatic series, as demand only truly picks up once collectors set out to complete their sets.

Proof – the art of minting rather than mass production

Both coins are struck in PP (Proof) quality. Multiple polishing of the dies, deep black mirrored fields, and silky-matte design elements: this minting technique requires manual craftsmanship and allows for only a few strikes per die. Please admire the coin only through its capsule – fingerprints are unforgiving on Proof surfaces. The scope of delivery includes the high-quality wooden case as well as a certificate of authenticity.

Silver as a solid foundation

Beyond its numismatic appeal, this set offers simple substance: 62.21 g of fine silver, traded worldwide, and liquid at all times. Silver coins have served as monetary and trading metal for millennia, while silver also remains an indispensable industrial raw material in electronics, solar technology and medicine – amid limited availability. A detail for German investors: profits from the sale are generally tax-free provided the one-year holding period is observed. Physical precious metal can also be passed down through generations and is valued by many as a quiet form of crisis protection.

Two coins, one animal, one conclusion: the Buffalo set is the exclamation mark behind Big Five III.
