2 oz Gold Lunar III Goat: double the fine weight, eighth chapter in the zodiac

  • Investment objective: a classic bullion coin for lasting value preservation, solid protection against loss of purchasing power, inflation hedge as well as tangible crisis protection in a single, easily transportable piece.
  • Design: a proud goat on a rocky mountain plateau, with barren rock and a single tree in the background – accompanied by the Chinese character for "goat", the inscription "GOAT 2027" and the famous "P" mint mark.
  • Material / fineness: 62.21 g of pure gold with a fineness of 999.9/1,000 – fine gold in investment quality, with no alloy additive, fresh from the die.
  • Manufacturer: minted by the renowned Perth Mint, one of the most storied names in the precious metals world.
  • Country of origin: Australia – official legal tender with a face value of 200 AUD.

With the Year of the Goat, the Gold Lunar Series III opens its eighth chapter. The goat is the eighth animal of the twelve-year Chinese zodiac cycle, and according to tradition, those born in 2027, 2015, 2003, 1991 or 1979 are considered gentle, creative and compassionate. Following the rabbit, dragon, snake and horse, this design radiates a quiet strength – a fitting quality for a coin intended as a store of wealth.

The design: mountain goat in fine relief work

The obverse design was created by Wade Robinson. The long, wavy fur, the curved horns, the rugged rock: at 40.90 mm in diameter, this creates a depth of relief rarely seen with this level of clarity in smaller denominations. On the reverse, the portrait of King Charles III, designed by Dan Thorne, is struck into the gold, together with the weight, fineness and face value. The coin also features a micro-engraved security mark within the design, visible only under magnification, which makes counterfeiting considerably more difficult.

Why this gold coin from Australia stands out

Gold is humanity's oldest currency – over 6,000 years old, recognised worldwide, and never rendered worthless because it holds intrinsic value. While fiat money can be printed and multiplied at will, the supply of physical gold remains limited. This scarcity is the core of its stability. It is no coincidence that central banks are the largest holders of gold in the world: they evidently trust their own paper money less than the metal in the vault.

The Australian Lunar coins offer two advantages in one piece. On the one hand, they are always liquid, tradable worldwide, and closely tied to the gold price. On the other hand, the design changes every year, which is why older vintages of the Lunar gold coins regularly enjoy special attention among collectors. It is precisely this dual role that sets the Lunar series apart from a purely standard investment.

Gold has been shining for thousands of years – and it will never lose its shine. It is God's money, the elder brother of humble silver, and a store of value that endures across generations.

2 oz or 1 oz? A comparison for investors

The 1 oz edition of the Lunar III Goat is strictly limited to 30,000 pieces, while the 2 oz variant is issued without a fixed mintage limit and follows demand. Anyone focused on the lowest possible cost per gram is generally better off with the larger format: a 2 oz piece bundles weight compactly, saves on storage space, and is more efficient to purchase than two individual coins. Those who instead wish to sell flexibly in small increments later on would do well to supplement their holdings with 1/4 oz or 1/10 oz editions – a proven building block for a finely divisible crisis reserve. Compared to classics such as the Krugerrand, Maple Leaf or Vienna Philharmonic, the Goat scores points with its higher fineness of 999.9 and its annually changing design; those seeking a pure weight investment can instead opt for gold bars, though they will then forgo collector appeal and legal tender status.

Another point that pleases many buyers: investment gold is exempt from VAT in Germany, and profits from its sale are generally tax-free after a holding period of at least one year. This places these Australian gold coins within a tradition that stretches from ancient Egypt through the Silk Road to the gold standard – and whose end is nowhere in sight.
