The anniversary mark
Above the springbok’s back: 10 years of the silver Krugerrand.
The first silver Krugerrand appeared in 2017, for the 50th anniversary of the series. 10 years later it carries a mark of its own above the springbok’s back.

The portrait side
A portrait from 1892: Paul Kruger on the Krugerrand 2027.
Paul Kruger in profile, framed by SUID-AFRIKA and SOUTH AFRICA. The likeness was crafted by the die engraver Otto Schultz, and according to the South African Mint it is struck from the original die of the 1892 Kruger half crown. The name Krugerrand joins Kruger with the rand, South Africa’s currency. The rand also recalls the Witwatersrand, the “ridge of white water”.

Ten years. That's how long it has been since the most famous name among bullion coins first appeared in silver. For the Krugerrand's 50th anniversary, the South African Mint released the first silver edition in 2017. It went on to become one of the most successful series among modern silver coins. With the 5 oz Silver Krugerrand 2027 in Proof quality, the mint now celebrates this anniversary. A small, round privy mark bearing the inscription "2017 • 2027 – 10 Year Anniversary" makes this year of issue unmistakable.
Whoever owns this coin holds a true rarity in their hands. Only 1,000 pieces are being minted worldwide. Collectors on every continent follow this series, and for a series like this, that is an extremely low mintage.
From Gold Classic to Silver Legend
The story begins in 1967. That year saw the release of the first Krugerrand in gold, the world's first bullion coin with its weight stated in ounces. Fifty years later, the silver version was added, and collectors embraced it enthusiastically. Since then, the silver Krugerrand has been available in various denominations and minting qualities.
One detail many people don't know: the bullion Krugerrand is produced jointly by the South African Mint and the Rand Refinery. The numismatic Proof-quality editions, on the other hand, are produced solely by the South African Mint. The mint is wholly owned by the South African Reserve Bank, the country's central bank. The origin and quality of this silver coin are therefore extremely well documented.
An Anniversary with Weight: All the Details at a Glance
With a diameter of 65 mm and 155.52 g of fine silver, this Krugerrand is a showpiece that is a pleasure to hold. In this large format, every detail comes into its own: the curved horns of the springbok, the texture of its coat, the grasses and hills in the background. On the springbok side are the inscription "KRUGERRAND", the split year of issue "20 – 27", and the bilingual inscription "FYNSILWER 5 OZ FINE SILVER R5".

Paul Kruger and the Springbok: A Design with History
The Krugerrand has carried the same design since 1967. Collectors particularly treasure this consistency. The obverse shows Paul Kruger in profile, framed by "SUID-AFRIKA • SOUTH AFRICA". On the reverse, the springbok leaps across the South African savanna. The design was created by sculptor Coert Steynberg, whose initials "CLS" still appear in the lower right of the field today.
In Proof quality, the design appears especially three-dimensional. Mirror-smooth fields meet finely frosted reliefs, and this contrast truly comes to life in the light.
Why Collectors Are Reaching for This Coin: Scarce, In Demand, Unmistakable
The reasons are quickly explained: a strictly limited anniversary edition, a world-famous name, and a large format that has only recently become available for the silver Krugerrand. Even the 5 oz 2026 edition was limited to 800 pieces. The 2027 year of issue additionally carries the privy mark, which makes it especially distinctive within the series. On top of that, there is the mint's consistent approach to limitation.
A mintage of just 1,000 pieces, a one-time anniversary, and the Krugerrand's worldwide fame: this combination is what gives this collector's coin its value appreciation potential.
And how does it compare? The 1 oz Proof version is the more affordable entry point for those who prefer to collect many years of issue in a smaller denomination. The 5 oz edition, on the other hand, offers significantly more presence and five times the silver. The Brilliant Uncirculated bullion version is not limited and is geared more toward pure metal value. The anniversary 5 oz coin combines both: genuine precious metal and numismatic appeal.
Silver: Sought After for Millennia
For centuries, silver served as money in many cultures and still stands for prosperity and prestige today. Industry also has strong demand for the metal, for example in electronics, solar technology, and medical technology. At the same time, supply is limited. Silver is durable, retains its properties permanently, and is traded worldwide. Alongside gold, it is the classic coinage metal par excellence, and for many buyers it is more easily affordable.
For private investors in Germany, it's worth taking a look at the tax situation: under current law, profits from the sale of physical silver are tax-free if at least one year has passed between purchase and sale. The coin can also be passed down nicely as a family heirloom to the next generation.
The 5 oz Silver Krugerrand 2027 in Proof quality is an anniversary piece not found in every collection. For those who have followed the series since 2017, this is a fitting highlight.
