For the anniversary, the Krugerrand 2027 carries a round mark. It sits above the springbok’s back, to the left of its head and horns.

The portrait side

A portrait from 1892: Paul Kruger on the Krugerrand 2027.

Paul Kruger in profile, framed by SUID-AFRIKA and SOUTH AFRICA. The likeness was crafted by the die engraver Otto Schultz, and according to the South African Mint it is struck from the original die of the 1892 Kruger half crown. The name Krugerrand joins Kruger with the rand, South Africa’s currency. The rand also recalls the Witwatersrand, the “ridge of white water”.

On July 3, 1967, the first gold Krugerrand was minted. Sixty years later, South Africa celebrates this milestone with a coin that can rightly be called a trophy: five troy ounces of fine gold, mirror-finish minting, and a specially designed anniversary mark. Add to that a mintage of exactly 60 pieces – a number that is no coincidence. Among South Africa's modern gold coins, hardly any issue is as deliberately designed for collectors as this one.

Six Decades of the Krugerrand – A Milestone with Weight

The Krugerrand was the first gold coin specifically designed as an investment in troy ounce denominations. At the time, South Africa's Chamber of Mines developed it together with the South African Mint and the Rand Refinery to make South African gold accessible to the entire world. It succeeded. To this day, Krugerrand gold coins remain among the most renowned bullion coins of all, serving as a model that many other mints later followed.

Remarkably, the design has remained virtually unchanged since 1967. The portrait of Paul Kruger on the obverse was created by Otto Schultz, while the springbok on the reverse was designed by Coert Steynberg. His initials "CLS" can also be found on this issue, to the right below the savanna scene. It is precisely this consistency that makes the Krugerrand so trustworthy.

The Privy Mark: A Small Symbol, A Big Story

On the springbok side, between the lettering and the horns, sits a fine round coin mark bearing the inscription "1967 · 2027 · 60 Year Anniversary". Privy marks have a long tradition with the Krugerrand. They commemorate special occasions and rank among the most sought-after collecting themes within the entire series. The 40th and 50th anniversary issues, for instance, remain highly popular among collectors to this day.

Proof – The Supreme Discipline of Coin Minting

For a coin struck in Proof quality, the dies and blanks are prepared with exceptional care. This creates mirror-like fields against which the Kruger portrait and the springbok stand out in frosted, razor-sharp relief. On a diameter of 50 millimeters, this contrast appears especially striking. The anniversary coin is presented in an elegant wooden case, and the enclosed certificate of authenticity confirms its provenance.

5 Ounces in Comparison: Who Benefits from the Large Format?

When people think of the Krugerrand, they usually picture the classic one-ounce gold coin. In the 2026 vintage, the 1 oz Proof variant was issued with 1,000 pieces, while the 2 oz Krugerrand in Proof quality had a mintage of 200. Even the 5 oz Krugerrand issued for the 50th anniversary in 2017 had a mintage of 500. By comparison, this anniversary edition plays in a league entirely its own.

Compared to coins made of 999.9 fine gold, such as the Maple Leaf, the Krugerrand is noticeably more resistant to scratches thanks to its copper alloy. Compared to smaller denominations, the 5 oz format impresses with substantial presence and a great deal of value in a small space. Two points are worth keeping in mind: collector's coins in Proof quality cost more than their pure material value, and a large coin can only be sold as a whole, not in smaller portions. Bullion Krugerrands are well suited as the foundation of a precious metals holding. This issue, however, is the crowning piece of a collection.

And what about gold bars? A 5 oz bar contains the same amount of precious metal, but it remains a purely metallic product. The Krugerrand, by contrast, is legal tender in South Africa. It combines its fine weight with six decades of coin history and, in this edition, offers an additional numismatic appeal that no bar can match.

Gold – The World's Oldest Currency

For over 6,000 years, gold has served as a store of value. Even in ancient Egypt it was a benchmark for trade, and kings as well as emperors wore it as a symbol of their power. Gold has never had a value of zero, because it possesses intrinsic worth. Central banks can expand fiat money almost without limit, whereas gold remains only available in finite quantities. Little wonder, then, that central banks themselves rank among the largest gold holders in the world.

Gold is God's money – it has shone for millennia and will never lose its shine.

As silver's big brother, gold is recognized worldwide and can be traded easily at any time. It protects against the loss of purchasing power and provides security during political and economic crises alike. In Germany, profits from the sale of physical gold are tax-free after a minimum holding period of one year, and investment gold is generally exempt from VAT. As a family heirloom, this anniversary Krugerrand connects generations while telling 60 years of South African gold history.
