The mountain

Visible from Yerevan

Anyone who comes to Yerevan can see Ararat rising in the distance. Many houses in the city are built of pink tuff, compacted volcanic ash. At sunrise and sunset, their colour glows brightest.

The mountain is over 5,100 metres high and today lies in Turkey. Beside its main summit stands Little Ararat. On the coin, too, the mountain has two peaks.

The design side

The dove flies towards the ark

Dove, ark and sun, details from the product image

In the centre, the ark drifts on the waves, a ship of planks with small windows and a superstructure like a house. From the left comes the dove with outstretched wings, an olive branch in its beak.

Behind it, the sun rises between the two peaks, and its crown of rays fills the whole upper part. Along the top runs the Armenian inscription, and at the bottom right stands NOAH’S ARK.

The design is by Eduard Kurghinyan. It refers to the account of the ark coming to rest on the mountains of Ararat.

The value side

The mountain appears twice on every coin

At the centre of the coat of arms: the mountain and the ark above the waves

The value side bears the national coat of arms of the Republic of Armenia. An eagle and a lion support the shield, and at its centre, as the Constitution lays down, stand Mount Ararat and Noah’s Ark.

So every Noah’s Ark coin bears Ararat twice: small in the coat of arms and large as a landscape behind the ark.

The coat of arms goes back to a design by the architect Alexander Tamanian and the painter Hakob Kojoyan.

The first bullion coin of the Central Bank of Armenia

It is issued by the Central Bank of the Republic of Armenia, which calls the ark the most expressive symbol of Armenian history. In Armenia, the coin is legal tender at its face value.

It is minted in Germany, by Geiger Edelmetalle AG. To the left of the coat of arms is the mint mark, LEV, to the right the weight and fineness, and below the coat of arms the face value in drams and the year.

  • Investment goal: Bullion coin for preserving value and as an inflation hedge, and as a quarter ounce a handy building block for your crisis protection
  • Motif: the dove of peace with the olive branch in its beak, which, according to the biblical story, showed Noah that the end of the flood was near
  • Material / fineness: Silver with a fineness of 999/1,000, 7.78 g fine weight
  • Production: minted in Germany
  • Country of origin: Armenia

An ark on rough water, mountains in the background, the rays of the rising sun above and, right at the front, a dove in flight: this scene makes the quarter ounce from the Noah's Ark series a coin with real presence. It is issued by the Republic of Armenia and minted in pure silver. Thanks to its small size, the 2022 issue is a good way to get started with silver coins and just as suitable as an addition to an existing collection.

Dove, ark and Ararat in the coin design

The motif draws on the biblical story of the great flood, which Noah survived in the ark with his family and the animals. According to this story, Noah sent out a dove, which returned to the ark with a fresh olive branch in its beak. From this he knew that the waters were receding. On the coin, the dove flies in the foreground, and behind the ark rise the mountains of Ararat, where, according to tradition, the ark came to rest. To this day, the dove with the olive branch is a familiar symbol of peace.

A quarter ounce of fine silver, Brilliant Uncirculated

With 7.78 g of fine silver and a fineness of 999/1,000, the coin consists almost entirely of precious metal. The Brilliant Uncirculated condition means that it has never been in circulation; its shiny surface shows the details of the motif clearly and sharply. The small size keeps you flexible: you can give individual coins as gifts, build up a collection step by step or later sell only as many coins as you need at the time.

Silver as a store of value with a long history

Silver has accompanied humanity for thousands of years as a monetary metal and a means of preserving wealth. Unlike paper money, which relies on trust in governments, silver is a finite raw material whose value is rooted in its physical properties. In addition, there is broad demand from industry: silver conducts electricity and heat better than any other metal and is needed in electronics, solar technology and medical technology. Anyone who holds part of their savings in silver owns a tangible asset that can one day be passed on to children or grandchildren.

Why Armenia shows the ark

For Armenia, the motif is more than a biblical scene. Mount Ararat is one of the country's most important national symbols, and the Armenian coat of arms shows the mountain with the ark on its summit. In this way, the coin brings a piece of Armenian identity into your collection, even though it is minted in Germany. If you collect coins from the Silver Noah's Ark series, the 2022 issue adds a handy quarter ounce to your collection.
