Three Goats, One Wish of Fortune: Swiss Fine Gold for the Lunar Year 2027

  • Investment goal: With gold bars you effectively shield your savings against currency devaluation – a handy inflation hedge in a small, flexible denomination.
  • Value preservation: A proven store of value that preserves the true purchasing power of your wealth – today, tomorrow, and for the next generation.
  • Protection: Inflation, recession, runaway national debt? With gold you set a solid counterweight.
  • Crisis protection: Small bars serve as a medium of exchange in an emergency – finely dosable, quickly traded.
  • Design: Three goats atop mountain peaks, each with a string of traditional Chinese coins, surrounded by auspicious clouds and the inscription 三羊开泰.
  • Material / fineness: 5 g fine gold with a fineness of 999.9/1,000 – purity at the highest level.
  • Manufacturer: Argor-Heraeus SA, a renowned refinery based in Mendrisio, founded in 1951.
  • Country of origin: Switzerland – "Swiss Made" is clearly displayed on the blister pack.

Some bars are bought purely out of reason. This one is bought with reason and with joy. The 5g gold bar from Argor-Heraeus for the Year of the Goat 2027 is the latest edition of the limited Argor-Heraeus Lunar series, which follows the Chinese zodiac. Only 18,888 pieces will be minted worldwide – a number full of eights, and the eight is considered the ultimate lucky number in China. Chinese New Year falls on February 6, 2027; from then on, the Goat reigns until the end of January 2028.

三羊开泰 – when three goats announce prosperity

At the heart of the design lies an ancient New Year's greeting: 三羊开泰 (sān yáng kāi tài), loosely translated as "three goats announce prosperity". Behind it lies an elegant play on words. The original phrase 三阳开泰 speaks of "Yang", the bright, life-giving energy of the spring sun. Because "goat" and "Yang" sound alike in Mandarin, the New Year's wish can be perfectly expressed through the zodiac sign of the year.

The relief brings this idea to life with great attention to detail. A majestic goat with powerfully curved horns is enthroned on the highest peak, with two smaller companions standing on their own rocks to the left and right. Each carries a string of ancient coins with square holes in its mouth. Auspicious clouds rise, and a frame of classic Chinese ornamentation encloses the image. Three animals, three peaks – a festive blessing for abundance, stability, and success.

The reverse: Swiss clarity

On the other side, the bar presents itself in a sober, trust-inspiring manner: the round logo of Argor-Heraeus SA, the inscriptions "Switzerland", "5g", "Fine Gold" and "999.9", the melter-assayer mark, as well as an individual serial number in the format 00000/18888. The piece is packaged in a red, sealed blister that also serves as a certificate. It states the weight, fineness, and bears the signature of the sworn assayer. As long as the blister remains sealed, authenticity can be verified at any time – a real advantage for later resale.

Small format, big impact against inflation

Fiat money can be multiplied at the push of a button. Gold cannot. Therein lies its strength. For over 6,000 years, the yellow metal has served as a store of value; even in ancient Egypt it was a unit of measure for trade. Gold is the oldest currency in the world – some even call it the money of God – and has outlasted countless paper currencies. It has never had a value of zero, because its intrinsic value is based on physical scarcity, not on political promises.

Those wishing to preserve the purchasing power of their wealth will hardly find a more reliable partner. While central banks control money supplies and national debts grow, the supply of gold remains limited. Tellingly, the world's largest holders of gold are, of all parties, the central banks themselves. They hold the metal as a reserve – a clear signal of just how much trust they actually place in their own paper money.

Gold has been shining for thousands of years. And it will never lose that shine – neither physically nor as a symbol of real, tangible value.

It is precisely the 5-gram denomination that plays to its advantage in uncertain times. Instead of having to sell an entire ounce, you part only with the portion you truly need. Whether as a medium of exchange during currency instability, as a building block of retirement provision, or as wealth to pass on to children and grandchildren: the bar is recognized worldwide, highly liquid, and can be converted into cash at any time.

Tax-attractive

As investment gold, the bar is exempt from VAT. If you hold it privately for longer than one year, profits from its sale are generally tax-free under current German law.

Lunar gold bar or coin? A direct comparison

Those wishing to invest in precious metal for the Year of the Goat often face a choice between this bar and the well-known Gold Lunar coins from the Perth Mint's Australian Lunar III series. Both impress with 999.9 fine gold, yet the differences are noticeable:

  • In favor of the bar: strictly limited mintage of 18,888 pieces per weight, individual serial number, sealed blister with certificate.
  • Clever size: 5 g sits exactly between 1/10 ounce (3.11 g) and 1/4 ounce (7.78 g) – ideal for gradually building wealth.
  • In favor of the coin: legal tender with a symbolic face value, issued by a state mint.
  • Compared to standard bars: a plain, design-free 5g bar comes with a lower premium, but offers neither collector appeal nor a limited mintage.

Our conclusion: anyone wishing to combine investment with a passion for collecting is spot on with the Lunar bar. The Goat also makes a wonderful gift for anyone born in a Goat year, such as 1979, 1991, 2003, or 2015.
