Heraeus
Gold, poured and stamped.
A family business headquartered in Hanau. Its roots go back to a pharmacy that the family ran from 1660 onwards.

The surface of the casting

The emblem
The hand with the roses

Heraeus bars bear a round emblem with the legend HERAEUS EDELMETALLE HANAU. A hand grasps the stems of three roses, with an H beside it.
The hand with the roses comes from the Heraeus family coat of arms, of which the emblem shows only a part. The family chronicle suggests that the apothecary Isaac Heraeus chose the motif in memory of his birthplace, Güstrow.
From the unicorn to the flame
1668
“Zum weißen Einhorn”
On the market square of Hanau’s New Town, Isaac Heraeus opens his own pharmacy in a half-timbered house and names it “Zum weißen Einhorn”, the White Unicorn.
1694
The first gold
His son, Franz Heraeus, supplies fine gold used to gild the letters, the ball and the weathercock of the French church in Hanau. Heraeus calls this the first contact with precious metals in its history.
1856
Germany’s first platinum melt
Platinum is much sought after in jewellery making, but until then it can only be forged and pressed when white-hot. After lengthy experiments, Wilhelm Carl Heraeus melts two kilograms of platinum with an oxyhydrogen blowpipe.
1768 °C
Platinum does not melt until it reaches this temperature.
1945
Destruction and a new beginning
Air raids in 1944 and 1945 almost completely destroy the works in Hanau, and on 19 March 1945 the original pharmacy building as well. After the war, Heraeus at first makes cooking pots, hotplates and immersion heaters. Above the entrance of the original building, rebuilt in 1951 and 1952, a bronze unicorn has recalled the pharmacy ever since.
2025
365 years
The family celebrates “365 years of Heraeus”. The company still belongs to the family today.
Assayed in Switzerland
The signature on the card
In our product photos, the card shows the fineness and the weight, the line “Vereidigter Edelmetallprüfer” (sworn assayer) with the signature Ruffoni, and the round seal of Argor-Heraeus with the word Switzerland.
Alessandro Ruffoni had been a sworn assayer at Argor-Heraeus since 1991, licensed by the Swiss Central Office for Precious Metals Control. His signature appeared on the certificates of bars from Argor-Heraeus and from Heraeus. After his retirement in 2023, it was gradually replaced by that of Simone Marsan.
Argor was founded in Ticino in 1951. The name combines argento and oro, the Italian words for silver and gold.

Inflation works quietly: over the years, the same amount of money buys you noticeably less. The 100g Gold Bar Heraeus (cast) counters this creeping loss with a value that cannot be printed and that you can hold in your hand. In this way, 100 g of fine gold becomes a reliable, German-made inflation hedge.
How a cast bar is made and how to recognise it
To make a cast bar, molten gold is poured into a mould, where it cools and solidifies. This creates a surface with fine irregularities that looks a little different on every piece. This rectangular bar with rounded corners bears the name Heraeus, the designation fine gold, the weight and the fineness, as well as a round company emblem with an H and the place name Hanau.
Below this, the bar carries its individual number. The same number appears on the certificate of authenticity, so bar and document clearly belong together.
Heraeus: a family company from Hanau
Heraeus is a family-owned company rich in tradition, headquartered in Hanau in the state of Hesse. The place name in the company emblem recalls these roots. As a manufacturer, Heraeus is certified by the London Bullion Market Association (LBMA), whose rules are regarded as the benchmark in the international gold trade. Your bar therefore carries a name that dealers and investors in many countries know and value.
Why gold holds its own against currency debasement
Paper money can be produced in any quantity; gold cannot. The earth's deposits are limited, and new gold has to be mined at great effort. This natural scarcity explains why gold has preserved its purchasing power over many generations, while numerous currencies have lost value or disappeared altogether. Central banks are among the largest holders of gold in the world and keep the metal as a reserve.
Gold has also proven itself as crisis protection. It does not depend on any payment promise made by a state or a company, and in its long history it has never been worthless.
100 g: a great deal of value in a handy format
With a fine weight of 100 g, this bar concentrates significant value in a small space. It fits into any safe and can be stored discreetly. At the same time, it remains handy enough for building up your gold holdings step by step or for passing on to children and grandchildren later. Gold is traded around the globe and can be converted back into cash whenever needed.
As investment gold, the bar is VAT-free. Private investors in Germany can realise gains from a sale tax-free after a holding period of one year.
Paper money promises value. A bar of fine gold embodies it.
