The bar reads “seit 1850” (since 1850); the house has carried the name C. Hafner since 1869.
The name
The C. stands for Carl.
In 1869, Carl Hafner carries on the sweepings works under his own name: C. Hafner. A reference from his apprenticeship values him for his “loyalty, honesty, love of work and morality”, in the words of his time.
Today, descendants of Carl Hafner run the house in the fifth generation; since 1995, Birgitta Hafner and her cousin Dr. Philipp Reisert have led it together. As its guiding principle, the house names the honourable merchant.
“We have a good name, but it only stays as good as it stands up to external scrutiny.”
- LBMAOn the Good Delivery List of the London Bullion Market Association since 2013, for gold.
- RJCCertified by the Responsible Jewellery Council to the Code of Practices and Chain of Custody, first in 2016, valid until 7 April 2028.
The assay
If it enters the house,it is tested.
In 1892 the Carl Dieterle assay office joins the house. The assay laboratory works with docimasy, according to C.Hafner the oldest known method of determining the fineness of gold alloys.
Every delivery is analysed. If it is melted down into a bar, that bar is drilled and the drillings are tested for their precious metal content. For the fire assay, a report from 2025 gives two to three days.
The laboratory is accredited by DAkkS as a testing laboratory to DIN EN ISO/IEC 17025, for determining fine metals in precious metal alloys, and it takes part in international proficiency tests.

1 Ounce Gold Bar C. Hafner: a value that is not tied to any currency
- Investment goal: Gold bars like this one keep inflation away from your wealth over decades.
- Preserving value: Fine gold keeps its substance, even when one currency is replaced by a new one.
- Protection: Rising prices, economic crises and national debt weaken currencies. Gold protects your savings from losing value along with them.
- Means of exchange: Even in a crisis, gold remains useful, for example as an equivalent value in an exchange.
- Production: minted in Germany, fineness 999.9/1,000
The inscription seit 1850 on this bar (seit means “since”) reaches far back: when C. Hafner began its work, there was not yet a uniform currency in Germany. Since then, the country has seen several currencies come and go. With this ounce of fine gold, you combine a lasting inflation hedge with the name of a German company rich in tradition.
What currency changes meant for savings
Mark, Reichsmark, Deutsche Mark: families who saved in Germany over several generations had to convert their money to a new currency again and again. Every change brought uncertainty, and in times of high inflation, savings held in paper money lost a large part of their value. A bar of gold, by contrast, kept its weight and its fineness, regardless of which banknotes happened to be in circulation. This experience speaks in favour of holding part of the family's wealth in fine gold.
Lettering and company mark of C. Hafner
The front is clearly structured from top to bottom. It begins with the name C.HAFNER in capital letters, and to the right of it, in a circle, is the monogram of a stylised C and H. The lines seit 1850 and GERMANY refer to tradition and country of origin, and the last line states weight and fineness: 1 ounce of fine gold at 999.9/1,000. The typeface is plain and matter-of-fact, entirely in keeping with an investment, and the corners of the bar are rounded.
What the card reveals about the manufacturer
The bar is sealed in a grey and white plastic card that protects its surface. On the left it bears the name C.HAFNER and the addition Edelmetall-Technologie (precious metal technology), on the right the note LBMA Good Delivery Refiner. The abbreviation LBMA stands for the London Bullion Market Association, and the designation Good Delivery Refiner identifies C. Hafner as a refinery listed by it. Precious metal dealers around the world therefore accept bars from this refinery without restriction, which makes a later sale easier for you.
An ounce as a reserve for emergencies
For times when the situation comes to a head, an ounce of gold is a reserve that you hold for your provision and can also exchange if needed. In this way, gold offers you crisis protection that does not depend on the fate of any single currency. A certificate additionally confirms its authenticity. No VAT is added on purchase, because this ounce is investment gold.
