1 oz Gold Somalia Elephant 2026 with ANA Pittsburgh Privy Mark – a Rarity for 100 Collectors

  • Strictly limited: This trade show edition is issued worldwide in a very low mintage of only 100 pieces worldwide.
  • Growth opportunities: Very high appreciation potential due to the strict mintage limit and the traditionally strong demand for privy mark editions.
  • Rarity: An exceptionally rare collector's coin – and thus the opposite of a freely available mass-produced coin.
  • Investment goal: Collector's coin with numismatic appeal, plus inflation hedge and value retention beyond the pure fine gold content.
  • Design: A mighty bull elephant heads to the water with a calf, while a zebra drinks in the foreground – enhanced by the colored privy mark "ANA Pittsburgh 2026".
  • Material / Fineness: 31.1 grams of the purest fine gold in top fineness 999.9/1,000 – i.e. 24 karat without compromise.
  • Manufacturer: Minted by the renowned mint Bayerisches Hauptmünzamt in Germany.
  • Country of origin: Republic of Somalia, face value 1,000 Shilling.

Once a year, the numismatic world gathers for the World's Fair of Money hosted by the American Numismatic Association. In 2026, Pittsburgh was the host: from August 25 to 29 at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center. Precisely for this occasion, this special edition of the Gold Somalia Elephant series was issued – in a quantity smaller than the number of dealer tables at such a trade show.

The Design: African Wildlife Meets Trade Show Privy

The obverse features the well-known elephant design of the "African Wildlife" series: a bull elephant with pronounced tusks, a smaller companion behind it, a zebra at a waterhole in front, and the sun over the savanna above. Around the edge reads AFRICAN WILDLIFE · ELEPHANT · 1 oz Au 999.9. In the upper left sits the circular, multicolor-enhanced privy mark with the inscription "ANA Pittsburgh 2026" – the distinguishing feature that sets this edition apart from any regular year of issue. The reverse bears the coat of arms of the Somali Republic: two rearing leopards holding the shield with the five-pointed star, flanked by the year 2026 and the face value of 1,000 Shillings. This makes this Somalia gold coin official legal tender of the Republic of Somalia.

The Somalia Elephant has been minted in Germany since 2004, and since the elephant design changes every year, this issue – once conceived purely as a bullion coin – has long since become a collecting field. Older years of issue are usually only available at a significant premium. Anyone who collects the series knows the pattern: the standard years of issue can be bought and sold at any time, while the trade show editions quickly disappear from the market. As a complement, the parallel silver coin with the same privy mark makes a good addition – though gold remains the big brother of the smaller silver piece here.

Why Gold – and Why This Particular Coin?

Gold is the world's oldest currency and has been a proven store of value for over 6,000 years. It has never had a value of zero, because its intrinsic value does not depend on trust in a government. The largest gold holders are central banks – remarkable, since they thereby hold a counterweight to their own product, fiat money. For private investors, there is an added benefit: investment gold is VAT-free in Germany, tradable worldwide, and highly liquid. Profits from the sale are generally tax-free if a holding period of at least one year is observed. This piece thus combines solid substance with the charm of a genuine rarity.

An ounce of fine gold retains its shine. A mintage of 100 pieces can never be recreated – once minted, it's minted.

Compared to classic gold coins such as the Krugerrand or Maple Leaf, which are produced in the millions and are primarily defined by their material value, this 1 oz gold coin plays in a different league: the premium is naturally higher than that of a purely standard bullion coin, but in return you receive a numismatic one-of-a-kind with a collector's premium. Those who want both – substance and rarity – like to combine this issue with broadly diversified bullion coins or with products for crisis protection. For collectors of the series, the matter is clear either way: with only 100 pieces, it's not the price that decides – it's speed.
