It never entered official circulation and its commercial concept failed. Instead, most Burgers Ponds were used as jewellery or keepsakes – many of which were lost or destroyed over time.

Although the Burgers Pond failed in its economic role, it later became a numismatic treasure. With the discovery of the coin's numismatic value in the late 19th century, a passion for the few remaining specimens began that continues to this day. Particularly noteworthy is the fact that two variants of the coin exist – one with a fine beard and one with a coarse beard in Burger's portrait.

While the Burgers Pond itself never entered circulation, it marked the beginning of a significant tradition of South African gold coins.
