This unique edition is available exclusively at Kettner Edelmetalle!
The Burgers Pond – the Original Form of the World-Famous Krugerrand
The Burgers Pond from the former Transvaal Republic marks the first attempt to cast South African gold into its own currency, thereby laying the foundation for what would later become known worldwide as the Krugerrand. The coin, minted in 1874, is closely tied to the history and identity of South Africa, as it was the first to be crafted from the country's rich gold deposits. This makes the Burgers Pond a direct precursor to the Krugerrand, which was introduced in 1967 as a symbol of South Africa's gold market.
The obverse of the Burgers Pond bears the portrait of Thomas Francois Burger, the fourth President of the Transvaal Republic, while the reverse displays the coat of arms. President Burger had the visionary plan to create a national coin from the gold of his homeland – a bold step that laid the groundwork for the later success story of the Krugerrand. Yet while the Burgers Pond entered history as the first South African gold coin, its journey was anything but straightforward.
In 1873, Burger sent 300 ounces of gold to London without consulting his own parliament, in order to have coins minted in the style of the English pound. At the firm of Ralph Heaton and Sons in Birmingham, 837 coins were ultimately struck. However, when Burger presented these to the Volksraad, the parliament of the Transvaal Republic, the coin was indignantly rejected. It never entered official circulation and its commercial concept failed. Instead, most Burgers Ponds were used as jewellery or keepsakes – many of which were lost or destroyed over time.
Although the Burgers Pond failed in its economic role, it later became a numismatic treasure. With the discovery of the coin's numismatic value in the late 19th century, a passion for the few remaining specimens began that continues to this day. Particularly noteworthy is the fact that two variants of the coin exist – one with a fine beard and one with a coarse beard in Burger's portrait.
While the Burgers Pond itself never entered circulation, it marked the beginning of a significant tradition of South African gold coins. Its production paved the way for the Krugerrand, which nearly 100 years later, in an entirely different era, would become a worldwide symbol of the South African gold market. Thus, the Burgers Pond is not only a rare collector's item, but also a historical testament reflecting the origins of the Krugerrand – the first vision of a coin struck from the gold of the land that was once Transvaal.
A Masterpiece of Numismatics
To commemorate this legacy, this special edition is strictly limited and impressively combines tradition with modernity. The obverse features, as customary, the portrait of Paul Kruger, while the distinctive privy mark of the Burgers Pond is subtly integrated. This coin thus honours not only the history of South Africa, but also the transition from the first South African gold coin to the legendary Krugerrand series – a connection between two numismatic legends!
Kettner Edelmetalle offers these coins exclusively worldwide. This product is a rarity with a very low mintage of only 100 pieces. This creates a very high appreciation potential for this collector's coin.
