The Monumento a la Independencia has stood on the Paseo de la Reforma since 1910. The column is 36 m tall, the Victory on top 6.7 m, designed and cast by Enrique Alciati. A chain on the monument stands for the end of 300 years of Spanish rule, for freedom. Libertad means freedom.

With the 1/2 oz Gold Libertad 2026, you bring home a piece of Mexican coinage history. Since 1981, the Casa de Moneda de México has minted this series on behalf of the Banco de México, and to this day it ranks among the most beautiful gold coins in the world. A classic. Yet one that still feels a bit like a fresh start every year, because the mintage of the Libertad is traditionally small and does not simply adjust to meet demand.

Victoria, Volcanoes, and an Aztec Founding Myth

On the obverse, the winged goddess of victory Victoria hovers above the Valley of Mexico. Her model is the famous Ángel de la Independencia in Mexico City, the symbol of Mexican independence. In her outstretched right hand she holds a laurel wreath, while the volcanoes Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl rise in the background. At the lower edge, attentive observers will spot agave and prickly pear cactus. The inscription states all the essentials: "1/2 ONZA ORO PURO," the year of issue 2026, and "LEY .999." Added to this is the mint mark Mo – an M with a small o above it.

The reverse tells a legend older than Mexico itself. An eagle perched on a prickly pear cactus, a serpent in its beak: this very sign was said to show the Aztecs where to found Tenochtitlan. Oak and laurel branches frame the coat of arms, above which arches "ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS," with a jagged pearled border completing the design. Unlike the 1 oz issue, the national coat of arms stands alone on the half-ounce coin – clean, uncluttered, very elegant.

A distinctive feature of the Libertad ounce and its fractional coins is the absence of a face value. Instead of a fixed peso amount, the Banco de México guarantees the value based on the gold price – an elegant solution that puts the material value front and center. Alongside the classic bullion coin, special Reverse Proof editions are also issued, and the Libertad has existed in silver since 1982 as well. Gold is, after all, the big brother of little silver.

Why Gold? Because It Has Outlasted Every Paper Currency

For over 6,000 years, people have stored their wealth in gold. Already in ancient Egypt it served as a unit of measure in trade, later kings and emperors wore it as a sign of their power, and in the 19th and 20th centuries it stood behind the major currencies as the gold standard. Fiat money can be multiplied at will. Gold cannot. Supply remains scarce, intrinsic value remains – the yellow metal has never once been worth zero.

Gold is the oldest currency in the world. It has shone for millennia – and will never lose its shine.

It is not without reason that central banks today are the largest gold holders in the world; apparently even they no longer trust their own paper money without reservation. Anyone looking to protect themselves against loss of purchasing power, currency risks, and political turmoil will find a proven crisis hedge in physical gold. On top of that come concrete advantages in Germany: investment gold is exempt from VAT, and profits from its sale generally remain tax-free after a holding period of at least one year.

Libertad, Krugerrand, or Maple Leaf? An Honest Comparison

All three contain half a troy ounce of fine gold. The difference lies in the details. The Krugerrand is alloyed to 22 karat, making it especially scratch-resistant, but it appears more reddish and weighs nearly 17 grams. The Maple Leaf and Vienna Philharmonic rely on 999.9 gold and very high mintages. The Libertad, by contrast, stands out with 24 karat, one of the most artistic designs among bullion coins, and significantly smaller mintages – which is precisely what makes it appealing to collectors as well. The price for this: the premium tends to be somewhat higher than for mass-produced coins, and pure gold is softer, which is why the coin capsule serves its purpose.

And why the half ounce? It's the golden middle ground. A more favorable ratio of premium to gold content than with 1/10 oz coins, while offering more flexibility than a full ounce should you later wish to sell only part of your holding. Compared to a small gold bar of equal weight, the gold coin also offers the status of legal tender and a design that is instantly recognizable worldwide.
