The Monumento a la Independencia has stood on the Paseo de la Reforma since 1910. The column is 36 m tall, the Victory on top 6.7 m, designed and cast by Enrique Alciati. A chain on the monument stands for the end of 300 years of Spanish rule, for freedom. Libertad means freedom.

Libertad 2026 in 1/20 oz: Mexico's Angel of Independence in Miniature Format

  • Investment goal: Compact bullion coin for wealth preservation and solid inflation hedge
  • Design: Goddess of Victory Victoria in front of two volcanoes, reverse shows the national coat of arms surrounded by a circle of ten historical eagles
  • Material / fineness: 1.56 g pure silver, fineness 999/1,000
  • Manufacturer: Minted by the renowned Casa de Moneda de México
  • Country of origin: Mexico

Small, fine, and unmistakably Mexican. With the 1/20 oz Silver Libertad 2026, you hold the smallest denomination of one of the world's most tradition-rich bullion coins in your hand. The Brilliant Uncirculated piece measures just 16 millimeters. And yet it carries the full, detail-loving design of the large one-ounce edition. No wonder the Libertad enjoys such a loyal fan base among silver coins.

Since 1982, the Casa de Moneda has minted the Libertad in silver, and since 1991 also in fractional ounces. The mint itself traces its history back to 1535 and is considered the oldest mint on the American continent. Anyone who chooses this year of issue acquires a piece of living coin history.

Victoria, Volcanoes and Ten Eagles: The Design in Detail

Obverse: The Angel of Independence

At the center floats the winged Goddess of Victory, Victoria. The model is the famous monument "El Ángel de la Independencia" in Mexico City, which commemorates the country's struggle for independence. In her raised right hand she holds a laurel wreath, in her left a broken chain. Behind her rise the volcanoes Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl above the vast plateau, while agave and prickly pear cactus frame the base. The inscription states weight, metal, year of issue, and fineness: "1/20 ONZA", "PLATA PURA", "2026", and "LEY .999". To the right of the figure sits the "Mo" mint mark of the Casa de Moneda.

Reverse: One Coat of Arms, Many Eras

The other side shows the modern national coat of arms of Mexico: the eagle perched on a nopal cactus, devouring a snake – the image from the founding legend of Tenochtitlán. It is surrounded by the inscription "ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS". In the outer ring, ten historical eagle coats of arms from different eras of Mexican history are arranged in sequence. In this way, a single side of the coin tells the development of an entire country.

Why Silver? A Metal with Substance

Silver has accompanied humanity for millennia as a monetary metal, medium of trade, and symbol of prosperity. Gold is considered the oldest currency in the world and has outlasted every paper currency – silver has always been its reliable companion. Unlike fiat money, which relies solely on trust in governments, the white precious metal possesses an inherent, physical value.

Add to that industrial demand. Electronics, photovoltaics, and medical technology require silver in large quantities, and new technologies are continuously opening up further applications, while supply remains limited. The metal is also extremely durable, tradable as a commodity worldwide, and highly liquid. Many investors therefore value it as a building block for long-term retirement provision, as crisis protection in politically and economically uncertain times, and as wealth that can be passed on to the next generation.

A tax advantage for private investors in Germany: profits from the sale of physical silver are generally tax-free after a holding period of at least one year.

1/20 oz or 1 oz? Strengths and Limitations Compared

The 1/20 oz plays in a league of its own. Those seeking as much metal as possible for their budget, on the other hand, tend to opt for the full ounce – whether Libertad, Maple Leaf, or Britannia. Both approaches have their merits, and it is precisely the combination that makes a silver holding flexible:

  • Low entry barrier: ideal as a first step into precious metals or as a regular addition
  • Maximum flexibility: small units can be sold selectively and in parts
  • Means of exchange on a small scale: practical for smaller transactions, especially in times of currency instability
  • Perfect gift: for christenings, birthdays, or anniversaries – with a design that makes an impression
  • Good to know: The minting effort for small coins is similarly high as for large ones, so the premium per gram is higher than for 1 oz coins

A Year of Issue with Collector Appeal

Unlike many bullion coins, the Libertad is traditionally minted in modest mintages. For the 2025 year of issue, according to figures from the Banco de México, only 200 pieces of the 1/20 oz in Mint State were produced. Official mintage figures for 2026 are not yet available. Collectors building a complete year-of-issue series particularly value the small denominations of the series. Within the Libertad family, there are also Proof versions for dedicated numismatists – the coin offered here is the classic Brilliant Uncirculated investment version.

An angel made of silver, a coat of arms full of history: The 1/20 oz Libertad 2026 proves that true value is not a matter of size.
