The Monumento a la Independencia has stood on the Paseo de la Reforma since 1910. The column is 36 m tall, the Victory on top 6.7 m, designed and cast by Enrique Alciati. A chain on the monument stands for the end of 300 years of Spanish rule, for freedom. Libertad means freedom.

Since 1981

In 1981 it began with this angel.Today the Libertad 2026.

In 1981 Mexico launched the Libertad in 1, 1/2 and 1/4 oz of gold, with the design of the Centenario. In 1991 the 1/10 and 1/20 oz followed, and in silver the 1/2 to 1/20 oz. Since 2000 the New Series in gold has shown the angel from a different angle.

1/10 oz Mexico Libertad 2026 – Victoria in Miniature Format

  • Investment goal: bullion coin for wealth preservation and solid inflation hedge
  • Design: winged goddess of victory Victoria in front of Mexico's volcanoes, with the national coat of arms framed by a wreath of historic eagles on the reverse
  • Material / Fineness: pure silver with 999/1,000 fineness – 3.11 grams fine weight
  • Manufacturer: minted by the renowned Casa de Moneda de México

Anyone familiar with the Silver Libertad knows: hardly any bullion coin carries as much national history within it. The 2026 year of issue in 1/10 ounce format brings this heritage down to a diameter of just 20 millimeters. Brilliant Uncirculated, made of pure fine silver and securely stored in a coin capsule, the small Libertad is an ideal entry point into the world of silver coins – and a must-have for collectors of this year of issue.

Freedom, Volcanoes and Ten Eagles: The Design

Obverse: Victoria over the Highlands

At the center floats the winged goddess of victory Victoria, her right hand extended with a laurel wreath. Her model stands in Mexico City: the "Ángel de la Independencia," the monument inaugurated in 1910 to mark the hundredth anniversary of the independence struggle. Behind her rise the volcanoes Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl. Agave and cactus in the foreground unmistakably place the scene in Mexico. Around the design you can read "1/10 ONZA," "PLATA PURA," "2026," and "LEY .999," as well as the Mo mint mark of the Mexico City mint.

Reverse: Coat of Arms within a Circle of History

The center is occupied by the modern national coat of arms. An eagle perches on a prickly pear cactus holding a snake in its beak – the Aztec founding legend of Tenochtitlan, today's Mexico City. The coat of arms is encircled by the inscription "ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS." Along the rim, ten historic eagles are lined up, each a symbol of an era in Mexican history. In this way, the reverse becomes a small chronicle in silver.

Mexican silver served as world money for centuries. The pieces of eight minted in Mexico City circulated from Europe to China – the Libertad continues this proud tradition to this day.

Casa de Moneda de México: Minting Tradition since 1535

Behind the Libertad stands the Casa de Moneda de México, founded in 1535 and thus the oldest mint on the American continent. Since 1982 it has minted the Silver Libertad as a bullion coin, with the gold variant having followed as early as 1981. The smaller denominations have complemented the series since 1991. A special feature: the Libertad is legal tender in Mexico, yet carries no stamped face value. Its value derives from its precious metal content.

Why 1/10 Ounce in Particular?

The Libertad ounce is the classic. But the tenth-ounce version has its own strengths – and tangible ones at that:

  • Low entry barrier: Even with a small budget, you can build up a silver holding step by step.
  • Flexible when selling: Small units can be sold individually without having to liquidate the entire holding at once.
  • A means of exchange on a small scale: Especially for smaller transactions in uncertain times, the handy denomination proves practical.
  • Appeal for collectors: The mintages of the fractional pieces are traditionally low; for 2026, the trade cites around 6,000 pieces.
  • Gift idea: For a christening, a birthday, or as the first building block for the next generation.

Compared to the 1-ounce Libertad, the premium per gram is naturally somewhat higher. In return, you receive a coin with a traditionally small mintage and enormous divisibility. While, for example, the 1/10-ounce Britannia carries a stamped face value in pounds, the Libertad remains entirely committed to pure metal value – a concept that many connoisseurs deliberately appreciate.

Silver as a Foundation for Wealth and Crisis Protection

Silver is one of humanity's oldest monetary metals. For centuries it formed the backbone of entire currency systems and state reserves, and in many cultures was regarded as a sign of prosperity and prestige. Unlike paper money, whose value rests solely on trust in governments, silver possesses intrinsic value. This is also fueled by industry: electronics, photovoltaics, and medical technology can hardly do without the white metal. New technologies are driving up demand, while supply remains limited.

For many investors, physical silver is therefore a reliable building block for crisis protection and a sensible way to diversify wealth. It is durable, tradable worldwide, and highly liquid. Another advantage: in Germany, profits from the sale are generally tax-free after a holding period of at least one year. Anyone wishing to buy silver to pass on value across generations will find a worthy companion in the Libertad.
