The anniversary mark
Above the springbok’s back: 60 years of the Krugerrand.
For the anniversary, the Krugerrand 2027 carries a round mark. It sits above the springbok’s back, to the left of its head and horns.

The portrait side
A portrait from 1892: Paul Kruger on the Krugerrand 2027.
Paul Kruger in profile, framed by SUID-AFRIKA and SOUTH AFRICA. The likeness was crafted by the die engraver Otto Schultz, and according to the South African Mint it is struck from the original die of the 1892 Kruger half crown. The name Krugerrand joins Kruger with the rand, South Africa’s currency. The rand also recalls the Witwatersrand, the “ridge of white water”.

The Piedfort
Piedfort means “heavy foot”: 2 oz of gold at the diameter of the 1 oz.
The word comes from French: pied means foot, fort means heavy. According to the South African Mint, a piedfort is twice as thick or twice as heavy as the proof coin of the same diameter and design. For the Krugerrand it arrived in 2024 as a new format. The glasses show the rim of both coins at the same point.

It launched in 1967, and in 2027 it celebrates its 60th anniversary. Hardly any coin has shaped the world of gold coins as strongly as the Krugerrand. For this milestone birthday, the South African Mint is releasing an edition that will make even seasoned collectors take notice. A Piedfort. Two ounces of fine gold within the diameter of a single ounce, and all in a mintage of just 200 pieces worldwide.
Piedfort: When Gold Goes Deep
The term comes from the French and roughly means "heavy foot." It refers to double-thickness strikes that have been considered special tokens of honor for centuries. That is exactly what this gold Krugerrand is. With a diameter of 32.69 mm, it exactly matches the familiar one-ounce format, but at around 5.2 mm it is roughly twice as thick. Anyone holding it for the first time immediately feels the weight: 67.86 grams gross weight, of which 62.21 grams is pure gold.
The Proof strike puts the finishing touch on the whole piece. This technique creates mirrored fields against which the designs stand out in relief. On such a massive blank, this effect achieves a depth that ordinary coins simply cannot reach. Quality you can see and feel.
The Design: A Classic with an Anniversary Greeting
On the springbok side, the famous antelope leaps across a typically South African landscape. Surrounding it are the words "KRUGERRAND," the year of minting "2027," and "FYNGOUD 2 OZ FINE GOLD." Small but significant are the initials "CLS" of sculptor Coert Lourens Steynberg. New is the round privy mark above the springbok bearing the inscription "1967 · 2027 – 60 Year Anniversary." It makes this year of issue unmistakable.
The reverse shows Paul Kruger in profile, framed by "SUID-AFRIKA · SOUTH AFRICA." There is no stamped face value. Nevertheless, the Krugerrand is legal tender in South Africa.
Why This Gold Coin Delights Collectors
Since 1967, millions of Krugerrands have been minted. By contrast, only 200 pieces exist of this Piedfort with the anniversary privy mark. Thanks to this limitation, the coin is a genuine rarity that appeals to several collector groups at once: Krugerrand fans, anniversary collectors, and lovers of Piedfort strikes. Like the Piedfort years 2024 and 2025 before it, this edition is also released as a limited mintage, except that it additionally carries the unique 60-year mark. When strong demand meets such a small supply, above-average appreciation potential arises. There are no guarantees for that, but there are good arguments.
- Compared to the bullion Krugerrand: significantly rarer, more elaborately struck, and featuring an anniversary mark. In return, a collector's premium is added to the pure gold value.
- Compared to the one-ounce Krugerrand in Proof: double the gold content at the same diameter, with noticeably more presence in the display case
- Compared to other two-ounce coins: not a wider format, but genuine depth. Only Piedforts offer this feature.
The coin is delivered in an elegant coin case with a certificate of authenticity. This permanently protects the sensitive surface and provides complete documentation of its origin.
Gold with History, Then as Now
Gold is humanity's oldest currency and a proven store of value for over 6,000 years. It has never had a value of zero, as it possesses an intrinsic value recognized by cultures from ancient Egypt to the present day. It is no coincidence that central banks are among the largest holders of gold in the world. For collectors in Germany, there is also a pleasant advantage: profits from the sale of physical precious metals such as gold are generally tax-free after a holding period of at least one year.
A Krugerrand Piedfort for the 60th anniversary, struck only 200 times: a piece of coin history that should not be missing from any serious Krugerrand collection.
Are you looking for a strictly limited anniversary edition of the world's most famous gold coin? Then you should buy the Krugerrand Piedfort 2027 at Kettner Edelmetalle and add a truly exceptional centerpiece to your collection.
