  • Rarity: sought-after collector's coin from the "Marine Animals" series
  • Design: sea turtle with Polynesian spiral ornaments – the hologram effect in the shell is directly minted in
  • Manufacturer: Kettner Edelmetalle, minted in Germany
  • Country of origin: Republic of Liberia, face value 20 Dollars
  • Fine silver: 1 oz (31.1 g) at a fineness of 999.9/1,000

Some coins need to be held in the hand for their effect to unfold. This is one of them. Across a 40-millimeter diameter, a sea turtle glides through a coral reef, its shell shimmering in turquoise, green and blue depending on the angle of light. The effect is neither applied nor lacquered on: the hologram is worked directly into the minting die using a special die-making technique – and is thus minted directly into the silver itself. It is precisely this craftsmanship that makes the piece so appealing to connoisseurs.

The Design: Reef Scene with Oceanic Ornamentation

The obverse bears the bold inscription "FIJI TAKU" at the top. Below it, the intricately engraved turtle swims from upper left to lower right, its head turned to the left with finely scaled skin and a deeply impressed eye. The shell plates are filled with koru or spiral motifs, as known from the Polynesian design vocabulary. The front and rear flippers appear three-dimensional; every scale is individually modeled.

The lower part of the design shows a vibrant reef: fan and branch corals, seagrass fronds, sea anemones, a starfish on the seabed and several small reef fish. Above this lies a deep black, mirror-polished water surface that makes the brightly frosted relief details truly stand out. An arc running from the lower left across the base to the lower right is framed by a band of alternating raised and recessed triangles – a traditional oceanic tapa ornament.

The Reverse: Pearl, Seahorse and Coral Garden

The reverse also stays true to the theme. At the top is the face value "20 DOLLARS", at the bottom the inscription "1 OZ 9999 FINE SILVER". At the center, a shell opens to reveal a pearl, above it the year of issue 2026, below it the issuing designation "REPUBLIC OF LIBERIA". A seahorse, a starfish, branching corals, a turret shell and a small turtle along with a school of fish complete the composition. The edge is reeded, and the coin is delivered in a protective coin capsule.

Taku – A Name with Resonance in the Collector's Market

"Taku" is the Fijian term for the sea turtle, more specifically the hawksbill turtle. The name became known through the Fiji Taku silver coins denominated in Fiji dollars, which were minted by the New Zealand Mint in the early 2010s and subsequently continued as the Niue Turtle. These were classic bullion coins issued in large quantities, sought after as an affordable turtle per ounce. The 2026 vintage reverses this principle: the same theme, but as an exclusive collector's edition in Proof quality and with a mintage of only 1,000 pieces worldwide. A complementary miniature edition of the sea turtle in gold also exists, likewise limited to 1,000 pieces – so anyone collecting both metals can build out the series consistently.

Why This Rarity Is So Sought After

Anyone who collects silver coins knows the pattern: bullion issues with mintages in the five or six digits are affordably priced above spot, but remain practically available indefinitely. A rarity with a very low mintage of 1,000 pieces works differently. Once the limited edition sells out, it is the collector's market alone that determines further development – and this is precisely what gives rise to the high value appreciation potential of this issue. Turtles have for years been among the most popular animal designs of all, which considerably broadens the circle of interested collectors.

Feel free to compare this piece with a regular bullion turtle coin, such as the Cayman Islands issues with mintages in the tens of thousands: there, pure material value takes center stage. Here, what counts is the mirror finish, the depth of engraving, the hologram and the scarcity – similar to the heavily limited Proof editions of well-known series that have accompanied collectors for decades. The premium per ounce is naturally higher than that of a silver bar, but in return you receive a collector's item that will not be repeated in this form.

Silver: Collecting Pleasure with Substance

Silver has accompanied humanity for millennia as a coinage metal, a medium of trade and a store of value. The metal is durable, traded worldwide, highly liquid and in strong demand from industry: electronics, solar technology and medical technology draw on it continuously, while supply remains limited. One point collectors are happy to note: profits from the sale of silver are generally tax-free, provided the holding period of at least one year is observed. Anyone wishing to diversify their holdings more broadly will also find products for inflation hedging and crisis protection with us.

A strictly limited collector's issue convinces through three things: a design that is unforgettable, a minting quality without compromise, and a mintage small enough to remain rare.

Secure the 1 oz Silver Fiji Taku Sea Turtle 2026 while the small mintage lasts. Experience shows that issues of this kind sell out faster than the number 1,000 might suggest – and there will be no re-minting here.
