The anniversary mark
Above the springbok’s back: 60 years of the Krugerrand.
For the anniversary, the Krugerrand 2027 carries a round mark. It sits above the springbok’s back, to the left of its head and horns.

The portrait side
A portrait from 1892: Paul Kruger on the Krugerrand 2027.
Paul Kruger in profile, framed by SUID-AFRIKA and SOUTH AFRICA. The likeness was crafted by the die engraver Otto Schultz, and according to the South African Mint it is struck from the original die of the 1892 Kruger half crown. The name Krugerrand joins Kruger with the rand, South Africa’s currency. The rand also recalls the Witwatersrand, the “ridge of white water”.

On July 3, 1967, the first Krugerrand left the minting press in South Africa. No one suspected at the time that this unassuming ounce would forever change the world of gold coins. Six decades later, the South African Mint celebrates the anniversary with a prestige set that will make collectors' hearts beat faster: six coins of the Gold Krugerrand, united in an elegant wooden case, each one bearing the anniversary privy mark. Only 400 of these sets exist worldwide.
Six Sizes, One Anniversary – The Contents at a Glance
From the classic ounce to the tiny fiftieth, the set represents the complete Krugerrand family. Together the coins weigh 59.72 g in fine gold, with a gross weight including copper content of 65.15 g.
- 1 oz Krugerrand – 31.10 g fine gold
- 1/2 oz Krugerrand – 15.55 g fine gold
- 1/4 oz Krugerrand – 7.78 g fine gold
- 1/10 oz Krugerrand – 3.11 g fine gold
- 1/20 oz Krugerrand – 1.56 g fine gold
- 1/50 oz Krugerrand – 0.62 g fine gold at only about 8 mm in diameter
The real highlight lies in the two smallest pieces. The 1/50 oz and the 1/20 oz are not offered individually. Anyone wishing to own them can only get them in this set – and this is exactly what makes the Prestige Set so sought-after among collectors. A certificate of authenticity accompanies every set.
The Privy Mark: Small Symbol, Big History
Those who look closely will discover it to the left of the springbok's head: a circular mint mark with a prominent "60" in the center, framed by "1967 • 2027" and "Year Anniversary". Otherwise, the design remains exactly as investors have known and valued it since 1967. The springbok, designed by sculptor Coert Steynberg, leaps across the South African landscape; his initials "CLS" are placed at the lower right above the inscription. There you will also find the bilingual weight statement between "FYNGOUD" and "FINE GOLD". The obverse features the portrait of Paul Kruger, based on a design by Otto Schultz.
Proof: Mirror Shine Down to the Smallest Detail
For the PP quality, the blanks are hand-fed and struck multiple times. The result is a mirrored coin field from which the frosted relief stands out in striking contrast. Even on the 8-millimeter coin, the fur, horns, and landscape remain razor-sharp. The capsules in the case reliably protect each specimen from fingerprints and scratches.
Krugerrand, Maple Leaf, Vienna Philharmonic – A Comparison
Maple Leaf and Vienna Philharmonic rely on 999.9 fine gold. This is pure, but soft. The 22-carat alloy of the Krugerrand, by contrast, is significantly more scratch-resistant, which is a real advantage especially for Proof collector coins. Add to that the unmistakable reddish color that makes a Krugerrand instantly recognizable. Compared to the regular bullion version, you pay a collector's premium – and in return receive an anniversary strike, top quality, and a mintage of only 400 sets. Back in 2017, the South African Mint already issued its own special editions with an anniversary privy mark for the 50th anniversary. The 60th anniversary continues this tradition.
- Advantage: The low mintage meets worldwide demand – this holds high potential for value appreciation
- Advantage: two denominations available only here
- Advantage: robust 22-carat alloy instead of delicate fine gold
- Good to know: As a collector's product, the price is above the pure metal value, since rarity and minting quality have their own value
Why Gold Has Inspired Trust for Thousands of Years
Gold is the oldest currency in the world. Already in ancient Egypt it served as a standard for trade, it changed hands along the Silk Road, and in the 19th and 20th centuries it underpinned entire monetary systems as the gold standard. Paper money came and went. Gold remained. It has intrinsic value, has never been worth zero, and can be converted into cash anywhere in the world without complication.
Gold is God's money – it has shone for over 6,000 years and will never lose its shine.
It is not without reason that central banks are the largest gold holders in the world; they do not seem to fully trust their own fiat money. While central banks can increase the money supply almost at will, the supply of gold is limited. This protects against loss of purchasing power and provides stability in political and economic crises. Investment gold also scores well from a tax perspective: the purchase is VAT-free, and profits from the sale are generally tax-free after a holding period of at least one year.
An Heirloom for Generations
The Krugerrand Prestige Set 2027 PP is far more than a collection of Krugerrand gold coins. It is a piece of coin history from South Africa, a record of the 60th anniversary, and a store of value that you can one day pass on to children or grandchildren. With only 400 sets worldwide, it's worth not waiting too long.
