The anniversary mark
Above the springbok’s back: 60 years of the Krugerrand.
For the anniversary, the Krugerrand 2027 carries a round mark. It sits above the springbok’s back, to the left of its head and horns.

The portrait side
A portrait from 1892: Paul Kruger on the Krugerrand 2027.
Paul Kruger in profile, framed by SUID-AFRIKA and SOUTH AFRICA. The likeness was crafted by the die engraver Otto Schultz, and according to the South African Mint it is struck from the original die of the 1892 Kruger half crown. The name Krugerrand joins Kruger with the rand, South Africa’s currency. The rand also recalls the Witwatersrand, the “ridge of white water”.

Sixty years. On July 3, 1967, the first Krugerrand was minted, marking the beginning of the history of the modern bullion coin. For this milestone anniversary, the South African Mint has issued a Fractional Set that brings together the entire range of small denominations in one case. Each of the five coins bears a specially designed Privy Mark on the springbok side: a small round plaque with the number 60, framed by "1967 • 2027" and the inscription "Year Anniversary". Anyone who experienced the anniversary editions for the 50th birthday in 2017 knows how sought-after such year-of-issue coins are among collectors.
The Gold Krugerrand: A legend in five sizes
Hardly any coin is as closely tied to the history of the precious metals trade as the Gold Krugerrand. For twelve years it had practically no competition. It wasn't until 1979 that the Canadian Maple Leaf joined the market. The designs have remained unchanged since the first year of issue: the portrait of Paul Kruger based on a design by Otto Schultz, and the springbok by Coert Steynberg. This consistency is what defines it to this day.
Since 1997, the South African mint has repeatedly issued special editions with Privy Marks, often to mark anniversaries or historical events. Among Krugerrand collectors, these editions form their own highly sought-after collecting area. The edition for the 60th anniversary continues this tradition.
The set includes the following denominations:
- 1/2 ounce: the largest piece in the set, ideal for admiring the details
- 1/4 ounce: the classic middle ground
- 1/10 ounce: a fixed part of the Krugerrand family since 1980
- 1/20 ounce: dainty yet still richly detailed
- 1/50 ounce: the smallest Krugerrand denomination, first issued in 2017, only about 8 mm in size
Together, the coins contain 0.92 ounces of fine gold. All five bear the year 2027, the weight in ounces, and the bilingual inscription "Fyngoud" and "Fine Gold".
Proof quality: Mirror finish on 22 carat gold
For Proof quality, polished dies and carefully prepared blanks are used, usually with multiple striking processes. This creates a flawless, mirrored coin field from which the matte springbok stands out in relief. This Proof quality is the pinnacle of coin minting.
The copper in the alloy gives the Krugerrand its warm, reddish shimmer. It also makes the coin harder than pure fine gold could ever be. Gold coins with 999.9 fineness, such as the Maple Leaf, are more susceptible to scratches, especially in small sizes. Their advantage is the higher fineness. In terms of gold content, however, the Krugerrand loses nothing: each coin contains exactly the stated weight of pure gold.
Fractional Set or Krugerrand Prestige Set?
In addition to the Fractional Set, the South African Mint also issues larger Krugerrand Prestige Sets, which additionally include the one and two ounce denominations. The Fractional Set is the elegant entry point: you need less capital yet still get the complete range of small denominations in Proof quality. Anyone who already owns a 1-ounce Krugerrand in Proof can use it to specifically expand their collection.
Gold: Trust spanning six millennia
Gold is the oldest currency in the world. Even in ancient Egypt it served as a standard in trade, and kings and emperors alike wore it as a symbol of their power. As a store of value, it has proven itself for over 6,000 years. Because gold has intrinsic value, its value has never fallen to zero. Central banks can expand fiat money almost at will, whereas the supply of gold is limited. Tellingly, it is the central banks themselves that count among the largest gold holders in the world.
Gold has shone for millennia and will never lose that shine.
Gold is silver's big brother. It is recognized worldwide, can be traded anywhere, and can be quickly converted into cash when needed. It has proven itself as a safeguard during political and economic crises, and it can protect your purchasing power against inflation and currency risks.
The Krugerrand is also attractive from a tax perspective. As investment gold, it is exempt from VAT, and profits from its sale are generally tax-free in Germany after a holding period of at least one year. A set like this is also very well suited for passing on to the next generation.
With only 400 pieces, the anniversary Privy Mark, and Proof minting quality, this Krugerrand Fractional Set 2027 is a highlight of the anniversary year. It appeals to collectors who want to own a piece of coin history, as well as to investors who value lasting substance.
