The anniversary mark
Above the springbok’s back: 60 years of the Krugerrand.
For the anniversary, the Krugerrand 2027 carries a round mark. It sits above the springbok’s back, to the left of its head and horns.

The portrait side
A portrait from 1892: Paul Kruger on the Krugerrand 2027.
Paul Kruger in profile, framed by SUID-AFRIKA and SOUTH AFRICA. The likeness was crafted by the die engraver Otto Schultz, and according to the South African Mint it is struck from the original die of the 1892 Kruger half crown. The name Krugerrand joins Kruger with the rand, South Africa’s currency. The rand also recalls the Witwatersrand, the “ridge of white water”.

Sixty years. That's how long the Krugerrand has been making history. On July 3, 1967, the South African Mint struck the first ounce of this coin, creating the world's first modern bullion coin made of fine gold. To mark this round anniversary, a set has now been released that will make collectors' hearts beat faster: four Krugerrand denominations in Proof quality, each featuring the official anniversary mark and presented together in an elegant case. A certificate of authenticity is included.
What's inside the anniversary set?
The Fractional Set brings together the small denominations of the Krugerrand – from the handy quarter ounce down to the tiny fiftieth ounce. Together they add up to exactly 13.06 grams of fine gold, or around 0.42 ounces, with a gross weight of 14.251 grams:
- 1/4 oz Krugerrand – 7.776 g fine gold
- 1/10 oz Krugerrand – 3.110 g fine gold
- 1/20 oz Krugerrand – 1.555 g fine gold
- 1/50 oz Krugerrand – 0.622 g fine gold
The 1/50 ounce in particular is a real eye-catcher. This miniature was only added to the Krugerrand family for the 50th anniversary in 2017 – and despite its tiny size, it displays every detail of the springbok with razor-sharp precision.
The privy mark: small but significant
To the left of the springbok's head sits a round mint mark bearing the inscription "1967•2027", the large number 60, and the words "Year Anniversary". Since the late 1990s, the South African Mint has featured special Krugerrand issues with such privy marks, for example to mark anniversaries, historic occasions, or international coin fairs. For connoisseurs, these issues form their own highly specialized collecting field. For the 60th anniversary, the mark becomes the visible stamp of a historic vintage.
A design that has captivated collectors unchanged since 1967
While many mints regularly change their designs, the Krugerrand remains true to itself. The obverse shows the portrait of Paul Kruger based on the 1892 design by Otto Schultz. On the reverse, the springbok leaps according to the design by sculptor Coert Steynberg, whose initials "CLS" can be found in the lower right of the motif. Also featured are the inscription "KRUGERRAND", the mint year 2027, and the bilingual weight designation "FYNGOUD – FINE GOLD" in Afrikaans and English.
Proof – when gold becomes a mirror
For the Proof finish, dies and blanks are elaborately polished and each coin is struck multiple times with increased pressure. The result: deep, mirrored fields against which Kruger and the springbok stand out as a matte shimmering relief. This quality can only be achieved in small quantities. The coins should therefore only be handled with gloves and are best kept in their capsules.
Fractional Set or full ounce? An honest comparison
Anyone looking primarily to accumulate fine gold should opt for the classic 1-ounce Krugerrand in bullion quality. It offers the lowest premium per gram. The anniversary set, on the other hand, plays in a different league:
- Rarity advantage: Only 400 sets with privy mark – a mintage that traditionally generates strong interest among Krugerrand collectors.
- Variety advantage: Four denominations in one case – ideal as a gift, for a christening, or as the foundation of a proof collection.
- Flexibility advantage: Small amounts of gold can be passed on individually as needed.
- Something to consider: Proof quality and small denominations mean a higher premium than with bullion coins – but in return you gain numismatic added value and rarity.
Compared to the American Gold Eagle, which is also made from 22-karat gold, the Krugerrand scores points for its longer tradition. And compared to the 2026 Fractional Set, which first brought these same four sizes in Reverse Proof, the 2027 issue carries the coveted anniversary mark.
Gold – trust that has shone for millennia
Gold is the world's oldest currency. Even in ancient Egypt it served as a standard of trade. Kings, emperors, and pharaohs wore it as a symbol of their power, and as recently as the 19th and 20th centuries, paper money under the gold standard was directly tied to the precious metal. For over 6,000 years, gold has proven itself as a stable store of value. It has never been worth zero – because it possesses an intrinsic value that does not depend on governments or printing presses.
Gold is God's money – scarce, enduring, and recognized worldwide.
While fiat money can be created at will, the supply of gold is limited. This makes the yellow metal a proven hedge against loss of purchasing power, inflation, and currency risks. Remarkably, the world's largest gold holders are the central banks themselves. They hold it as a reserve to support the financial system. Gold is liquid and tradable worldwide, can be exchanged for cash at any time, and is excellently suited for passing on wealth from generation to generation.
Gold's tax treatment is also convincing, as the big brother of silver: Krugerrand gold coins are classified as investment gold in Germany and are therefore exempt from VAT. Profits from the sale remain, in principle, tax-free for private individuals after a minimum holding period of one year.
A vintage that exists only once
The Krugerrand Fractional Set 2027 combines six decades of coin history with the highest level of minting craftsmanship. Whether as the centerpiece of your own collection, as a memento of a special anniversary, or as a value-retaining gift: these four gold coins from South Africa tell a story that began in 1967 and has lost none of its shine to this day.
