Threatened with Extinction, Back Today: The Story Behind the Design

The Wisent is Europe's largest land mammal. Yet, at the beginning of the 20th century, it had completely disappeared from the wild. Only a few animals survived in zoos and enclosures. From this small stock, breeding programs and reintroduction efforts rebuilt a population over decades. Since 2013, free-ranging Wisent have once again roamed the forests of Germany. This is a success that would hardly have seemed possible a hundred years ago.

Obverse and Reverse in Detail

Artist Jasmin Lewis from Linsengericht designed the obverse. Her initials "JL" appear to the right of the animal. In the centre, the Wisent strides calmly forward while turning towards the viewer. The characteristic shaggy fur on the head and shoulders is finely modelled. As a result, the relief appears remarkably three-dimensional despite the coin's mere 17.5 millimetres. Sharp silhouette lines stand alongside smoothly stretched body surfaces. Below, a simple ground with individual tufts of grass suggests the habitat. The lettering "WISENT" is embossed into the ground in relief.

The reverse shows the federal eagle. Surrounding it are "BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND", the year 2026, the face value of 20 Euro and the twelve stars of Europe. The mint mark of the respective mint is also included. The edge is reeded.
