Proof

The original
The Mark was part of daily life. The memory remains.
The 1-DM coin entered circulation in 1950, designed by Josef Bernhart. This 2026 coin takes up its design once more. It is not an issue of the Federal Republic of Germany or the Deutsche Bundesbank.

Three editions
3 sizes.One memory.
Shown in their true proportions. For comparison: the 1-DM coin measured 23.5 millimetres, the silver Heiermann 29.

Hardly any currency has shaped the trust of the Germans as much as the Deutsche Mark. From 1948 to 2001, it was the cash currency of the Federal Republic. The 1-DM coin with its two oak branches sat in almost every wallet for over half a century starting in 1950. This very design is now returning, this time not in copper-nickel, but in pure fine gold. The Gold Deutsche Mark 2-Coin Set 2026 contains two coins with 0.5 g of fine gold each. Together, that is a full gram of investment gold.
Two finishes, one design: Proof meets Reverse Proof
What makes this set special becomes clear when you place both coins side by side. The first coin was struck in Proof. Its field is polished to a high shine and reflects like a dark lake, while the numeral, lettering, and oak leaves emerge finely matted. With the second coin, it is exactly the opposite: in Reverse Proof, the field remains silky matte while the raised elements shine. Two techniques, one design, and each coin looks different in the light.
The design in detail: obverse and reverse
On the obverse, the large "1" stands prominently, flanked on the left and right by an oak branch with acorns. Below, in classic antiqua lettering, follow the words "DEUTSCHE MARK" and the year 2026, framed by a circle of pearls. The model is the well-known historical circulation coin. The reverse shows an eagle with widely spread wings and artfully scaled breast feathers. At the eagle's feet sits the small state emblem of Liberia, alongside "25 DOLLARS" and "Republic of Liberia". The inscription at the top states "0.5g 9999 FINE GOLD" for weight and purity, while "DEUTSCHE MARK" completes the circle at the bottom.
A quarter century after the 1-DM gold coin issued by the Bundesbank in 2001, this new minting brings the money of the Germans back once more in fine gold. For people who saved with the Deutsche Mark, the design carries a personal touch. The true substance, however, is the gold.
Genuine investment gold – not a mere souvenir
As much sentiment as the design carries, the value of this set lies in the fine gold. Here, you are not buying a keepsake, but full-fledged investment gold. It is minted fine gold with a purity of 999.9/1,000, whose value is based primarily on the gold price. Among the small gold coins, the 2-coin set is therefore a particularly flexible building block for growing wealth in small steps.
- Value retention: Gold has an intrinsic value, has never been worth zero, and has served as a store of value for over 6,000 years.
- Divisibility: The two 0.5 g coins can also be sold individually if needed.
- Tradability: Fine gold is recognized worldwide, highly liquid, and can be resold at any time.
- Purchasing power: As part of your inflation hedge, gold preserves purchasing power across generations.
- Stability: Supply is limited and cannot be printed at will like paper money. This makes gold a stable anchor in your personal crisis protection.
Gold is the oldest currency in the world. It has outlasted kings, empires, and countless paper currencies, and still shines today.
It is no coincidence that central banks are among the largest gold holders in the world. They hold the precious metal as a reserve because its supply is limited and no printing press can increase it. Gold is also well suited for retirement planning. It can be passed down from one generation to the next without any loss of value from wear, as it retains its physical properties over the years.
In comparison: Goldmark 2001, gold bar, and single coin
When people think of the Deutsche Mark in gold, they usually picture the 1-DM gold coin issued by the Deutsche Bundesbank in 2001: 12 g fine gold, 23.5 mm diameter, a mintage of one million. For that, considerably more capital is needed. The 2-coin set, with a diameter of 14 mm per coin, brings the same iconic design as a compact entry point with 1 g of fine gold, and with a very low mintage of 250 sets. A plain 1 g gold bar is usually priced closer to the pure material value. However, it cannot be divided and has no special finish. Compared to a single 0.5 g coin, the set offers the direct contrast between Proof and Reverse Proof.
Give the gift of a genuine gold investment
Give genuine investment gold as a gift for a christening, a milestone birthday, or Christmas. Anyone who once held the Deutsche Mark themselves will instantly recognize the design. For the younger generation, the set is an entry point into physical gold investment, as small amounts of gold accumulate into substantial wealth over the years. Despite the personal occasion, you are acquiring full-fledged investment gold here, whose value is based on the gold price.
The Gold Deutsche Mark 2-Coin Set 2026 from Kettner Edelmetalle combines a piece of German monetary history with what endures permanently: one gram of pure fine gold.
