The Copper Age

The first tools made of metal

Copper was the first metal from which people made tools and weapons. At first they took native copper, as nature brings it forth in pure form, and hammered it into shape.

A copper pendant from the north of today’s Iraq is dated to about 8700 BC. It is estimated that copper was known as early as 7,000 years before tin; the time up to bronze is therefore also called the Copper Age.

Fire

Above 1,080 °C, copper turns liquid.

After hammering, people learned to melt copper and cast it in moulds. Egyptian sandstone furnaces and crucibles bear witness to this.

More than 5,300 years ago, Ötzi carried an axe with a blade of almost pure copper from southern Tuscany. It had been cast in a mould and, once cooled, compressed by hammering.

The name

The metal from Cyprus

In antiquity Cyprus was a major supplier of the metal, as the Etymological Dictionary of German records.

More than 3,000 years ago, copper bars were already being made on Cyprus. One of them, weighing almost 37 kilograms and bearing an impressed mark, is now in the British Museum.

The colour

A metal with a colour of its own

Copper is one of the very few metals with a colour of its own. Pure copper is salmon red, as the German copper association describes it.

Hardly any metal conducts heat as well. And copper is dense: a cube measuring one centimetre along each edge weighs almost nine grams.

Time

The patina grows with the years

Exposed to the air, copper first takes on a dark brown to almost black layer, which on a roof is largely even after about two to three years. Over many years this usually becomes the green of old copper roofs.

This patina protects the metal beneath it, and it is not verdigris.

Patina makes copper more beautiful with age.

The piece

Liberty on both sides

The motif side shows Lady Liberty after the Statue of Liberty: in her right hand she raises the burning torch, on her head she wears the crown of rays, and in her left hand she holds a branch. Behind her the New York skyline rises above the water, and at the bottom stands the word LIBERTY.

The value side carries the coat of arms of the Republic of Liberia: a sailing ship off the coast, the rising sun, a palm tree, a plough and a spade and a dove with a scroll. Above it, on a ribbon, runs the motto THE LOVE OF LIBERTY BROUGHT US HERE, and around it stand the name, face value, weight and fineness.

With its face value the coin bar is a coin and legal tender in Liberia. It measures 120 x 72 x 15 mm and weighs 1,000 g.

The issuing country

Liberia lies on the west coast of Africa. The ship in its coat of arms stands for the ships that brought free and formerly enslaved people from the United States to this coast. The palm stands for prosperity, the rising sun for the birth of a nation, the plough and spade for the dignity of labour, the dove for peace. The coat of arms was adopted in 1847.

1 kg Copper Minted Bar Liberty 2026 – Lady Liberty in Front of the New York Skyline

A full kilogram of copper, a world-famous icon, and an official face value: the 1kg Copper Minted Bar Liberty from the Lady Liberty Series combines all of this in a single piece. Anyone who holds it for the first time immediately feels its weight. And then the eye falls on the design.

This minted bar is issued by the Republic of Liberia with a face value of 10 Dollars. It is made of pure copper with a fineness of 999/1,000 and arrives to you in the minting year 2026 in Proof quality.

The Design: Liberty, Torch, and Manhattan

At the center of the obverse stands Lady Liberty, inspired by the famous Statue of Liberty. She raises the burning torch into the sky, wears the radiant crown, and holds an olive branch in her left hand, a classic symbol of peace. Her robe falls in deep, sculpturally modeled folds down to the pedestal.

Behind her rises the New York skyline. On the left, the One World Trade Center towers upward; on the right, the Empire State Building and the Chrysler Building can be recognized. In the foreground lies the water, on which small boats are traveling. A finely waved background gives the surface depth and movement. At the very bottom, the inscription LIBERTY appears in large letters.

A nice detail: the real Statue of Liberty, inaugurated on October 28, 1886, itself wears a skin of copper – only about 2.4 millimeters thick. There is hardly a more fitting design for a solid copper bar.

The Reverse: Liberia's Coat of Arms

On the reverse, the coat of arms of the Republic of Liberia can be seen. A sailing ship off the coast, the rising sun, a palm tree, plow and shovel, as well as a white dove with a message, tell the founding story of the West African country. Above it runs the banner with the motto "The love of liberty brought us here". In addition, the inscriptions REPUBLIC OF LIBERIA, 10 DOLLARS, 1000 g, and 999/1000 FINE COPPER are featured. Liberty is thus the connecting theme of both sides, as the country's name Liberia is also derived from the Latin word for liberty.

What Defines a Minted Bar?

Bars that bear a coin stamp are called minted bars. At first glance, they look like an ordinary bar: rectangular, solid, angular. However, due to the embossed face value, they are considered a coin in Germany. In the issuing country, they are even legal tender because of this official face value. Of course, no one actually uses them to pay. Their appeal lies elsewhere, as they combine the look of a bar with the design freedom of a collector's coin.

A classic, cast 1 kg copper bar, such as from Geiger or Heimerle + Meule, has a simple, rustic shape and usually only bears weight and fineness. The Liberty minted bar, on the other hand, is designed on both sides and bears national emblems and a face value. Anyone wanting mainly a lot of material is well served with the cast bar. Anyone looking for a design with history will find it here.

Copper: The Ideal Entry into the World of Coins and Bars

Gold is considered humanity's oldest currency. Copper is one of the oldest metals that humans have ever worked with, and coins were already being struck from it in antiquity. Today, many discover their passion for collecting through copper. With copper coins and copper bars, beginners get to know the feel and look of coins and bars before perhaps turning to gold or silver. In the warm, reddish color of the metal, fine reliefs look particularly beautiful.

In addition, there is a wide selection of designs. Especially in the USA, numerous copper rounds, i.e. copper medallions, are struck with a wide variety of designs, and Liberty depictions are particularly popular there. Most copper buyers are classic collectors who enjoy building their own collection piece by piece. For them, the 1 kg Minted Bar Liberty is a real highlight:

  • impressive format with a full kilogram of copper
  • official face value of the Republic of Liberia
  • detailed design featuring Lady Liberty and the New York skyline
  • fitting for 2026, the year the USA celebrates 250 years of independence
  • an impressive gift for collectors and lovers of America

Storage Tips

Copper is a living metal. Over time it can darken and develop its own patina, and the Statue of Liberty impressively demonstrates how beautiful that can look. Anyone who wants to preserve the fresh shine for as long as possible should only handle the minted bar with cotton gloves and store it dry and airtight.

Whether as the centerpiece of your copper collection, as a weighty desk object, or as a gift with symbolic power: secure the 1kg Copper Minted Bar Liberty 2026 at Kettner Edelmetalle and bring a piece of liberty home.
