Stocks such as government debt carry on from the last official reference date at the pace of the last twelve months. Annual figures such as the deficit and interest add up this year's official figures and carry on in the same way from the last reference date. IMF figures for the current year are forecasts.

Gold cannot be printed.

Every euro in your account is a claim on a bank, and behind the euro stand states with trillions in debt. Gold is nobody's debt. It has been money for thousands of years, and no central bank can multiply it.

That is why central banks themselves keep buying gold: Poland 157.5 tonnes in twelve months, China 106.1 tonnes.

Sources and method

Every figure comes from official statistics and is fetched afresh every day: Eurostat, the European Central Bank, the Deutsche Bundesbank, the US Treasury and the International Monetary Fund. The gold price comes from our own price data.

Between two releases we extrapolate: a stock keeps growing from its reference date as fast as in the twelve months before. An annual figure such as the deficit adds up the official quarters of the current year and carries on from the last reference date at the pace of the last twelve months. With the next official figure the clock jumps to the new level.

New debt is the growth of the debt since 31 December, official up to the last reference date and extrapolated from there. The deficit is the gap in the budget. Debt usually rises faster, because governments also grant loans, buy stakes and build up cash reserves.

The M3 money supply grows at the pace of the transactions of the last twelve months, so a new country joining the euro does not count as newly created money.
