From Trajan's Heyday to Justinian's Byzantium

Under Trajan, the Roman Empire reached its greatest extent. Commodus, as emperor, stepped into the arena himself – a scandal that ended with his assassination in late 192. Septimius Severus bears the epithet "Victor over Persia" in the product title: historically, it was the Parthian king Vologases V whose capital Ctesiphon fell in January 198. After this, the emperor took the title Parthicus Maximus.

Then the picture shifts. Gallienus, Aurelian, and Probus ruled in the midst of the Crisis of the Third Century, as usurpers, Germanic invasions, and a creeping debasement of silver coinage shook the empire. Aurelian recovered the East and also took care to improve coin quality; Probus cleared Gaul of invaders. Diocletian reorganized the empire in 293 with the Tetrarchy and created a weighty new bronze denomination with the large follis. Constantine the Great paved the way for Christianity as a religion and made Constantinople the new capital in 330. And Justinian I, whose follis of 543 concludes the collection, had the Hagia Sophia built, codified ancient Roman law, and reconquered Italy.
