Lunar Year of the Goat Starter Set: Three Coins, One Zodiac Sign

  • Set contents: 1 x 1/10 oz Gold Lunar III Goat 2027, 1 x 1 oz Silver Lunar III Goat 2027, and 1 x 1 oz Silver Lunar Year of the Goat 2027 in Black Proof with partial gilding.
  • Design: Three completely distinct designs of the same animal. The gold issue depicts a proud billy goat with a long shaggy coat, accompanied by boulders, a gnarled tree, the character 羊, and the inscription "GOAT 2027". The Australian silver coin tells the scene "Three Goats Bring Luck", featuring a mother goat, a kid, and a resting goat beneath blossoming plum branches. The partially gilded variant, in turn, is all about drama: a powerfully curved pair of horns, rendered in dimensional gilding, set against a deep black-finished mountain backdrop.
  • Material / Fineness: Exclusively high-purity investment metal. The gold comes with a fineness of 999.9/1000, the Australian bullion silver coin also with 999.9/1000, and the Niue rarity with 999/1000 fine silver. Total fine weight of the bundle: approximately 65.31 g.
  • Manufacturer: The Perth Mint in Australia strikes the gold and silver issues of the Lunar Series III, while the New Zealand Mint is responsible for the partially gilded Black Proof coin issued for Niue.
  • Year of issue & mintage limit: 2027 – the Chinese Year of the Goat begins on 6 February 2027. The partially gilded issue is limited worldwide to 888 pieces, while the Perth Mint's 1 oz silver coin is limited to 300,000 pieces.
  • Finish: reeded edge, brand new condition, packaging varies by issue (coin capsule or presentation case with numbered certificate of authenticity).

Anyone entering the world of Lunar coins always faces the same question: gold or silver, investment or collector's piece? This starter set answers it three times over. You receive the complete cross-section of a vintage year – from the classic bullion strike to the strictly limited premium finish.

The three coins in profile

The gold coin leads the way. The 1/10 oz coin, struck in 999.9 fine gold, bears the portrait of King Charles III on its value side, along with the face value of 15 Australian dollars and the "P" mint mark of the Perth Mint. And rest assured: this is no wafer-thin foil, but a solidly struck coin with clearly noticeable material thickness, neatly encapsulated. Small denominations like this are among the most popular gold coins of all, as they can be sold individually whenever needed.

The 1 oz silver coin from Australia is the workhorse of the set – an internationally traded investment size with excellent liquidity. The third coin is a very different matter: Black Proof, partial gilding, 38.60 mm diameter, only 888 pieces. Mintages like this are the stuff collectors' dreams are made of.

Why the goat?

In the legendary Great Race, the goat reached the finish line as the eighth animal – crossing the river together with the monkey and the rooster. In the Chinese zodiac, it stands for harmony, compassion, and creativity. Following 2003 and 2015, the Perth Mint is now dedicating a Lunar series to the goat for the third time, and precisely these vintages have historically sold out quickly.

Silver and gold: the twin foundation

Silver has accompanied humanity for millennia as a coinage metal, medium of exchange, and symbol of prosperity. Unlike fiat money, whose value rests on trust, it possesses an intrinsic, physically tangible value. Add to this the industrial demand – electronics, solar technology, medical technology – coupled with limited supply. Silver coins are also more affordable than gold, making them ideally suited for smaller transactions.

Gold is humanity's oldest currency. It has outlived every paper currency that has ever competed against it.

A tax note that will please silver investors: in Germany, profits from the sale of physical silver are generally tax-free, provided the minimum one-year holding period is observed.

Who this set is worth it for

  • Beginners who want to hold precious metals in their hands, not just read about them.
  • Collectors of the Lunar series who wish to document a complete vintage year across different finishes.
  • Investors who wish to combine wealth preservation and inflation hedging with a tangible piece of culture.
  • Gift-givers: A Year of the Goat set for a birth, an anniversary, or the Lunar New Year has real character.

Compared to a pure bullion purchase, refined issues come with a higher premium – but in return you get rarity, craftsmanship, and a design that truly comes alive in the light. Those focused purely on metal weight will opt for standard bullion. Those seeking both substance and collector appeal will find exactly the right mix here.
